Thanks! Personally I think that the Liberty ships were ugly ducklings, but they were functional ducklings. And any surviving reciprocating marine steam is good steam.

I personally like the militant austerity of wartime designs. the Kriegsloks and the Riddles Austeritys and the S-160's and Dock Tanks all have their own unique "handsomeness" to them, even when compared to their glittering contemporaries like the BR05, Coronation or Loewy Steamliners.Β

Function over Form has its place, particularly in Wartime.Β

Well the thing was usually engines like the S160's and the kreigsloks were built as quickly and cheaply as possible in vast numbers. This meant that there were many construction shortcuts, such as ferrous metals being used where nonferrous metals should be, lots of shotty welding and in the case of the S160's; not all of them were equipped with sightglasses or other devices.

After the war, those that survived did receive those things. I have seen both the kreisgloks, the USA 0-6-0T's (in commercial service i might add) and the S160 in person and both are very sturdy and reliable machines when rebuilt properly. With the exception of the Kriegslok, there arent many wartime machines I personally like in the looks department. It was function before form, but to a point.

The few times form came before function Id say had to be the american streamliner era, as much of the streamlining did not decrease wind resistance much at all. But I get what your saying.

Sorry about going on a tangent there : / im sort of an opinionated asshole...

thank you, as always!Β

I did this as a commission for someone who works on her engines. I was actually invited over there to work on them as well. An opertunity I will not pass up once I get the chance!

She might be an ugly duckling, but steam is steam : >

They were good, brave ships, vital in a noble crusade against sheer evil.

I am very interested to see her insides. she was built as fast as possible and was built with the idea that she very well might get blown to smithereens.Β

Alot of S160 2-8-0's were built that way. Alot of them did not even have a sight glass, only tri cocks, and steel throughout (as little nonferrous metal as possible.) When in Hungary I got to see a restored S160 to running condition. When built and finished to a non wartime condition they can be very sturdy and reliable locomotives. Here is a picture of the old

When I went down there I realized that there was no way her 'Black Gang' were getting out if she took a torpedo. But they served anyway. Β Hatred and fanaticism couldn't beat that kind of heroism.

Goodness and kindness fall very quickly and easily to hatred and fanaticism, in this case a torpedo. but she and her crews got very lucky.

I do not mean to sound pessimistic, its just I look very objectively at situations almost as if they were like a machine. Most situations at least. They were heroic and brave and I have great respect for it but wars are won with bigger guns, not bigger hearts.

I rather strongly disagree. The American Revolution to Viet Nam.

Sad fact there is that more than half of the colonists would have rather stayed British Subjects, albeit with more representation in Parliament. All the rhetoric in the cause meant squat until the US actually started winning BATTLES and showing they had the military strength to back up their position. and we almost lost it all in the War of 1812.Β

This idea that the whole of the 13 colonies were full-on gung-ho for independence is the same Historical fantasy as that Vietnam was 100% opposed by the American public: contrary to popular belief, 2/3 of the American troops in Nam were VOLUNTEERS, and in terms of Military action the US was actually WINNING.Β

I was responding to Phil's point that 'victory is always on the side with the biggest guns.' Big guns indeed help, but, 'the size of the fight in the dog' can also win wars, particularly 'luxury' wars that one side doesn't feel it HAS to win.Β
