Description A little Great Tit (Parus major). It is a widespread and common species throughout Europe and Asia in any sort of woodland. It is resident, and most Great Tits do not migrate.
Those birds are really nervous and easily scared away.

is that your bird feeder or your grandma's? Good idea about the water in summer - my cardinal is looking a little plump... but it IS winter!

Wild-Soul In reply to SanibelRoo [2009-01-02 11:40:59 +0000 UTC]

That's my Grandma's.^^
It's good that he's looking plump in winter. Wouldn't want that he's freezing, would we?^^
The water in summer is very cool. When you're using a something flat like... you know... a pan or something then you maybe can catch them bathing in it.

haha - no. I guess some extra weight is good for the winter! And it is COLD here! Below freezing!

Yes, I keep a small bowl for them by the feeder now but right behind is a nice creek. I caught a blue jay today in there giving himself a quick bath!

I just can't believe how much they eat! Every day the feeder is empty! It is hard to keep up with them! And not easy on the wallet! But that's ok. At least I am helping them.

Same here! Also it's very beautiful outside but it would be better without the cold.

Very cool! I really like Blue Jays. Blue is such a rare colour in birds atleast around here.

It's really amazing, isn't it? My Grandma usually feeds them in the morning and by midday it's all empty. Beside the things the don't like and the hull of the sunflower seeds.
Are you feeding your Jays with Peanuts too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SanibelRoo In reply to Wild-Soul [2009-01-05 04:53:57 +0000 UTC]

We only have 2 or 3 that come every now and then and I hear they like the sunflower seeds so I don't do peanuts. Once I see them more regularly though I will. I remember you saying how much they like them!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wild-Soul In reply to SanibelRoo [2009-01-05 16:38:59 +0000 UTC]

You have to give them a reason to come more regulary! Ours only come when there are peanuts. But we put out pieces carrots yesterday and they vanished really fast also we didn't see who took them.

SanibelRoo In reply to Wild-Soul [2009-01-05 19:43:19 +0000 UTC]

ok - I am going to the store today I will get some peanuts. Carrots huh? Well I shall try that as well!

Maybe you'll see who takes them.

It can't be a rabbit here cause they don't fly, do they? But I've head about mice climbing up walls.

Cute.. I love birds at 5pm every night we put out small strips of raw beef or lamb for our Butcherbird family.

Mum has had two chicks three months apart and was starting to look really thin..

Chick No 1 Benji now feeds itself Chick No 2 BB has not been out of the nest very long so still depends on Mum. plenty of birds here, I planted the right kind of Flora and there are three bird baths and a birds swiming pool, the Lily Pond.

No Kitty's Allowed... Sorry.

Oh, that's very cool! To watch the young ones growing up is really amazing.

Our birds only get corn and sunflowerseeds. But I bet if we would start putting meat out a lot of crows would come. Also they would scare all the other birds away.
We'd a small family of woodpeckers around in summer. They came every night to feed from the hazelnuts.

Firey-Sunset In reply to Wild-Soul [2009-01-02 03:38:20 +0000 UTC]

I can understand you feeding them only grain or seeds.
I have never seen a woodpecker that sound lovely eating hazelnuts

These Butcherbirds are Insect eating birds..
And Yes it is lovely to watch them grow up Hadrian if they get the chance that is.

I've caught him once. [link] But usually you only hear them pecking on the trees.

I hope that yours will make it! Are they staying where they hatched or do they look for a new territory once they're grown up?

The males go elsewhere the females seem to stay, the last chick Barney born Spring 2007 [link] and Bill [link] as in female born Spring 2006 were poisoned by a neighbour last August.

An accident she said as the bird seed she puts out for the Lorikeets was attracting mice so she laid bait the mice died and the butcher birds were seen pulling the mouse apart then were never seen again.

It almost broke my heart ..

Hopefully your neighbour learned something from last!

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Benji and BB make it to adulthood and start a family of their own. Maybe even in your backyard!^^

I seen Benji feeding the younger one BB tonight with the small strips of steak I put out for them, it does the heart good to see this, even more so when Benji is such a young bird too.

I hope they do too Hadrian

What a pretty little birdy! Good shot! Bird photography is not one of my strong suits. That is one thing I would like to work on this year.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wild-Soul In reply to Tazzy- [2009-01-01 18:57:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank You!!
To be honest I'm not so fond of birds. But my Grandma feeds them all the time and so it's pretty easy to photograph them. They're kinda greedy.
So, if you like to take shots of birds maybe you should try to attract them with food first and in summer maybe with water. (So they don't get too fat with all the birdfeed )
