Description A retreat to harbor.

---

This is version 2 of this painting. The first version here: [link] just wasn't satisfying me for some reason. I feel this revision has a better air about it. Perhaps a case of "less is more." What do you guys think?

i too like this one more. maybe it is because in the previous version too much focus was put on an object that didn't have any particular purpose? i don't know. just a guess.

I like both versions, but found the ruin in the center of the original commanded my attention a lot. I love the mood of misty beach.

I love it when paintings have rough, energetic brushwork, yet such apparent detail. It really feels like you painted this on location.

I like both of them, but I agree that this one is better--the atmosphere drags you further into the scene. In the first one, the tower hogs too much attention.

yeah the tower was too much, unless the tower was meant to be the focus of the whole picture. This one has a much more serene mood to it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wildweasel339 In reply to AnnaRDunster [2012-07-25 21:19:38 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, the tower was too basic and uninteresting, yet still took focus away from the whole picture.

Thanks!

DexterLexter [2012-07-25 16:06:05 +0000 UTC]

The mood is definitely better in this one. The broken tower in the other version is very prominent, it draws all the attention to it, but it does not convey anything to me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wildweasel339 In reply to DexterLexter [2012-07-25 21:21:37 +0000 UTC]

Aye, I spent at lot of time on the tower, but I could tell it wasn't really adding anything of value to the image. "If it doesn't work, get rid of it!"

DexterLexter In reply to Wildweasel339 [2012-07-25 22:59:37 +0000 UTC]

i can see that you spend a lot of time on the tower. the decision was probably not easy, i support it.

: ) heh, yes, that's good advice.

Amazing seascape, you chose the color scheme well for the mood(love the foggy effects too) ...what kind of tablet do u use? i was thinking of getting one soon(saving up money) and want to try a bamboo pad. would you recommend the 'Splash', 'Capture', or 'create'?if you dont use Bamboo, it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me ur prefs. thx

Wildweasel339 In reply to manga-cat-22 [2012-07-25 21:24:12 +0000 UTC]

I use a wacom Intuos 3. I've never used a bamboo, but I would recommend getting an Intuos for the added pressure sensitivity and pen weight. It is worth the price.

I like both versions actually. Besides environmental believability, I feel like there needs to be something magic happening here... maybe some strange mist rolling in. I really like your colour palette. I love your light coming through the clouds, but perhaps, again, I wish there was more fantasy, more exaggeration.

Great work man, your water looks great!
