did you use a layer of black paint first? im trying to put designs on my own chucks but need to understand how its usually done

Pretty much, yeah. And then mixing white into colors makes them opaque so they show up over black. You can go back and make them more saturated later after that.

Hmm... never tried sharpies. I use acrylic paints with a fabric medium. My newest journal is also a FAQ list with more information that might help.
