Description This is a Black-fronted Bush Shrike, Telephorus nigrifrons.  In South Africa it is only found in a few moist, tall forests in the far northeast of the country.  This I painted from a photograph taken by my friend Geoff Goetsch in the Magoebaskloof forests.  We saw a few of them, high up in the trees.  It was only the third time I saw them!  They're very colourful birds, and what's more they come in different colour schemes.  This is the male, the female has less of a black face mask.  Some have orange-yellow breasts, some bright red breasts, some have black breasts!  You may even find different colour variants in the same forest.  These birds hunt insects and are found from South Africa through east and central Africa to Kenya.  A related species, the Many-coloured Bush Shrike, also comes in different colour schemes.  Watercolour.

What a gorgeous species! That sudden splash of sundown orange is spectacular. Fascinating to hear there's different colour schemes too, and that they can occur sympatrically. The more I glance back and forth between this comment and your painting, the more I appreciate how you painted the mid body (from neck to branch basically). Somehow, between the shadows and feather texture you've managed to convey the bird's shape wonderfully. Now combine that with the blurrier back- and foreground, and you've got a real sense of depth going on. It actually reminds me of those old school 3D pictures you'd need blue-red glasses for to see them 'pop'! Great stuff

Hello and thanks for your message!  I am happy you enjoy this painting.  It's from a bird I saw myself, photographed by a friend - and photo used with permission.  It was only the second time I'd seen this species, in fact - and they are gorgeous indeed!

That's even nicer, when the painting depicts the very individual you have seen yourself. So cool that you got to see them out in the wild!

Shrikes impale prey on thorns, don't they?

True shrikes, yes!  This is a bush shrike, actually quite a different family of birds.  They don't impale their prey, they just eat it.
