Description
This is a Black-fronted Bush Shrike, Telephorus nigrifrons. In South Africa it is only found in a few moist, tall forests in the far northeast of the country. This I painted from a photograph taken by my friend Geoff Goetsch in the Magoebaskloof forests. We saw a few of them, high up in the trees. It was only the third time I saw them! They're very colourful birds, and what's more they come in different colour schemes. This is the male, the female has less of a black face mask. Some have orange-yellow breasts, some bright red breasts, some have black breasts! You may even find different colour variants in the same forest. These birds hunt insects and are found from South Africa through east and central Africa to Kenya. A related species, the Many-coloured Bush Shrike, also comes in different colour schemes.
