Description A loving couple of lovebirds!  The rosy-faced lovebird, Agapornis roseicollis, is the parent species of most lovebirds in the pet trade.  Few people realize that these tiny parrots are native to southern Africa!  What's more, they're birds of desert and semi-desert, rather than inhabiting lush savannahs or rainforests.  They have an interesting habit of tucking nest materials into their dense rump feathers, to carry them back to their nests.  They sometimes take over spare nesting chambers in the huge communal nests of sociable weavers.  Acrylic.

I think that, no matter the species, parrots are just so cute. And the smaller ones are among the cutest!

So lovebirds are the African equivalent of budgerigars. Since they are also similar in care and difficulty, it makes sense.

Great job on the plumage, how do you get the strokes so soft yet visible enough to show the feathers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WillemSvdMerwe In reply to herofan135 [2017-07-11 18:14:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  Well I do many overlapping layers actually so there's a lot of softening of the lines.

kailavmp [2017-07-10 09:48:12 +0000 UTC]

They look so fuzzy! But knowing what their feathers are really like, I have to say you got them exactly right. And yes, it is quite weird feeling knowing that these, in our area purely pet birds, are living as free species somewhere! But that may be because individual birds I've interacted so far were mostly barely mentally capable of finding a food bowl if it was put in a different place- I find it unimaginable that such birds could survive in the outside world. Rhat nest-material tucking is really funny habit of theirs!

WillemSvdMerwe In reply to kailavmp [2017-07-11 18:15:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the lengthy comment!  I do sometimes wonder but the escapees over here in Polokwane have managed to hang on in the wild for years now so there must be still some instincts buried in there.
