Description Proof that I do it. Actually, just messing around like the result too much to not post. Couple of things here. Firstly, after the minor style change, the way I did fur wasn't entirely working, made a slight change. Noticable? Not a huge difference. Also, started using blending stump heavily on fur. Liking the effect. Opens up some new possibilities. Second, due to a conversation sort of I had with someone, I realised that I haven't once in my entire gallery drew anything even close to looking at the viewer- always almost or completely to the side. Simultaneously, realised I can't really draw things facing the viewer at all. Started working toward fixing that. I didn't want looking right at the viewer, I think that looks odd anf funny, but something kind of close. Not bad first attempt. Other doodles also on the page, and a few tests... nothing important this time, just a slight artistic development, and only maybe.

Pencil lead suddenly became lighter (I use a mechanical pencil, the leads inside must have gone from one brand to another) than I would have liked it. Also forgot to re-outline some places. Expect next picture have darker outline, if possible. Not sure how I'l pull it off now, still don't want to use pen. Might try a normal not mechanical pencil.

Also, chipping away at list of deviations to comment on- down to sixty something out of the near three hundred there were the other day. Trying to get everyone on there at least once or twice, more if there's a lot I like

Anyone have any tips for black fur (or even fur in general)? I can't get the hang of it, no matter what I try it ends up looking like... well... looking like that. I've tried emulating people who I have seen do black in a way that I like and I can't even do that. So, if anybody knows anything.... I'm open to hear it.

Edit: Forgot to mention something. Sorry.

Okay, I think today I'll stop being lazy and actually comment on your stuff 8D

I love this piece! So hot ^^ This one is why I wasn't commenting lately, I was jealous of the sexy vixen, and this is also the piece that made me draw that last pic of Nyki as a vixen! xD I really love the angle of the face on this one and the pose and anatomy here are exceptionally appealing! Very nice work for "just messing around" Also, I don't get black fur very well either, so I'm not if much help to you there!

(BTW, last night on msn was that my computer that died? It didn't even tell me that it signed me off, and I kept typing to you wondering what happened to you, and all of a sudden it said all my comments couldnt' be recieved and when I signed back in you were gone =\ So if it was me then oops! Sorry!)

Ohh, you like teh sexy vixens, eh? That's useful knowledge >:3 I guess it's not a bad thing that makes up the majority of what I draw

Yeah, it was you who went poof. I noticed after a little while that it said you were offline and I was talking to myself. So I kept talking to myself for a bit but it got boring and I left XD You were gone for some time. I assumed that you're internet screwed up again, and you just decided to stay off. I guess not

But anyway, thanks. Glad ya like it

I like the front-facing angle of her face. It looks really nice, and is a neat change after all of those side-views (Though I can't say I ever noticed that habit of yours). But, her face became somehow cat-like in the frontal view. I think it's because the foreshortening didn't quite work, and her muzzle appears to be shorter at that angle than in the others, to the point of feline appearance, at least to me. I suck at front views as well and I'm not sure of how to remedy it, but I know that other artists can draw the frontal view of a long muzzle and still have it look long.

At any rate, neat little drawing. You art-sploded a bit while I was offline!

Really, you never noticed? I figured if anyone would pick that up, it'd be you. You seem to be quite observant.

Actually, nobody seems to notice many of my recurring bad habits- I make a lot of similar mistakes in each picture, and all my pictures are quite similar, but nobody has ever called me out for it. Not that I'm complaing, just noticing. Regardless, I'm slowly working toward fixing those things, so hopefully after some time there won't be anything like that to point out anyway

Anyway, returning to the topic at hand here, you're 100% right about the face- I actually noted tat myself once I got the head done, so I'll have to start working on fixing that eventually. I have some ideas that might work. I've noted that with the more reaslistic artists, foreshortening of muzzles seems to be almost entirely dependant on the shading for an accurate look, but I'm not sure what to do with a less realistic one- study will be in order, me thinks.

Uh, yeah. Anyway, thanks!

I have nothing but praise for you with all your new artwork. Like I had mentioned before, I am quite pleased by what you're doing with your faces now. They seem to have more feeling/expression to them than they did before. I'm really happy to see how you're improving. You're doing wonderfully!

there's two things you can do with fur

1) draw in every strand at actual size proportion to the character so it looks real (time consuming. very)

2) don't draw in all the fur. colour in a solid tone, then use the outline, shading and highlight to reflect the "fluffiness" of the image. ex:
[link] (it was done digitally, but i used the brush like a real one, so the effects would be the same with pencil)

WilliamRichard In reply to Rakshar [2006-06-26 04:08:34 +0000 UTC]

Well, most fur I have little problem with. But the darker the fur gets, the more trouble I have getting it to look right. Dark browns and blacks are impossible for me. Interestingly, can't do white fur either. Actually, that second one is what I've sort of been doing all along. I under coat in yellow-orange, and then light brown up the darker spots, only start doing fur around orange, then red and dark brown come last... in my experience I've found the more layers yo do with a furry effect versus solid tone the better it looks. But when I try this with black it dies. Dunno why. I'll figure something out eventually....

Rakshar In reply to WilliamRichard [2006-06-27 00:46:44 +0000 UTC]

how about cutting down on tones? Fur isn't spectral. A fox's fur should be one base red, then a darker roan-red for shades and a lighter orange-red for highlights.
I don't have red, i only have grey, but it's the same thing: [link]
the base colour is solid, no tints or tones just solid. you have the "spikey" fur lines around the edges of the character. Only in the shadow and highlight do you have textured areas, and only around the perimiter of the tone. In your images, i can see individual streaks of fur or tone. despite each strand being seperate, they still act like a unit.

Black fur is just the same, except instead of adding a shadow and a highlight, you'r adding 2 highlights. one highlight is the lighter tone, the other is the white sheen. so it would be black solid base, lighter highlight toward light source, and then sheen. Sheens are tricky because they don't go above the hilgight, they are actually seperate from it, they might be even in the opposite angle like reflected light.

WilliamRichard In reply to Rakshar [2006-06-29 03:19:22 +0000 UTC]

Most of the tones are only highlites anyway- I use a lot but the darker I get, the less area I use them on.

Anyway, I'm happy with how I do normal fur anyway. It's only black I don't like. But black isn't quite the same. I'd have to start black and put on a lighter shade, then an even lighter one- but after black is down, nothing else really wants to make it lighter, so I need to start light, but that makes it look odd- but I actually think I have come up with a way to do black anyway, I'll play with a bit and see what comes up.

Looks great, especially for a first try! I always find frontviews awkward, you pulled it off really well. The fur has so much texture to it, you have wonderful coloring skills.

As for the black fur, I heard somewhere that an undercoat of dark blue makes it look better? Good luck with finding a technique, black fur is incredibly hard.

Ha, muzzles suck. X3 As for a first try, this is one hell of a first try. o.o; As for that muzzle... Maybe you could look at a real fox, or other animal, to see what a frontal view would really look like. Try a Google Images search, it might spark somehting if you haven't done that already. As for the black fur... I can't help you at all there! X3

However, if you have an idea, feel free to bring it up and depending on many factors I might just bring it to light. No guarantees, though It'd be just the same, only free, less chance of happening, and you don't get the hard copy XD

Holy crow! That looks amazing, for practice, this is pretty amazing! Wonderful work, the pose looks great and the details and colors and just amazing, really impressive work.

I don't know what to tell you about the black fur though, I can't really render fur that well traditionally. All I can say is maybe use multiple grays to build up the highlights and then so what you do for the fur texture.

Thanks, I did this on my rougher cheaper paper, so I'm kind of excited to try what I did this time on my smoother paper. Gives me something to do tomorrow.

Eh, that's what I usually do, and it kind of melts into a barfy black goo mess. I really just need to get a good look at how it's done. Some people can do it so cleanly and it looks great. I'm not one of them XD I'm sure I'll figure it out one way or another eventually
