Really, you never noticed? I figured if anyone would pick that up, it'd be you. You seem to be quite observant.
Actually, nobody seems to notice many of my recurring bad habits- I make a lot of similar mistakes in each picture, and all my pictures are quite similar, but nobody has ever called me out for it. Not that I'm complaing, just noticing. Regardless, I'm slowly working toward fixing those things, so hopefully after some time there won't be anything like that to point out anyway
Anyway, returning to the topic at hand here, you're 100% right about the face- I actually noted tat myself once I got the head done, so I'll have to start working on fixing that eventually. I have some ideas that might work. I've noted that with the more reaslistic artists, foreshortening of muzzles seems to be almost entirely dependant on the shading for an accurate look, but I'm not sure what to do with a less realistic one- study will be in order, me thinks.
Uh, yeah. Anyway, thanks!

I have nothing but praise for you with all your new artwork. Like I had mentioned before, I am quite pleased by what you're doing with your faces now. They seem to have more feeling/expression to them than they did before. I'm really happy to see how you're improving. You're doing wonderfully!

This was rather startiling when it first popped up, only because I didn't expect any hot colors to jump out at me after the cooler colors of your picture with the purple in it. I like it, another fav.

there's two things you can do with fur
1) draw in every strand at actual size proportion to the character so it looks real (time consuming. very)
2) don't draw in all the fur. colour in a solid tone, then use the outline, shading and highlight to reflect the "fluffiness" of the image. ex:
[link] (it was done digitally, but i used the brush like a real one, so the effects would be the same with pencil)

Well, most fur I have little problem with. But the darker the fur gets, the more trouble I have getting it to look right. Dark browns and blacks are impossible for me. Interestingly, can't do white fur either. Actually, that second one is what I've sort of been doing all along. I under coat in yellow-orange, and then light brown up the darker spots, only start doing fur around orange, then red and dark brown come last... in my experience I've found the more layers yo do with a furry effect versus solid tone the better it looks. But when I try this with black it dies. Dunno why. I'll figure something out eventually....

how about cutting down on tones? Fur isn't spectral. A fox's fur should be one base red, then a darker roan-red for shades and a lighter orange-red for highlights.
I don't have red, i only have grey, but it's the same thing: [link]
the base colour is solid, no tints or tones just solid. you have the "spikey" fur lines around the edges of the character. Only in the shadow and highlight do you have textured areas, and only around the perimiter of the tone. In your images, i can see individual streaks of fur or tone. despite each strand being seperate, they still act like a unit.
Black fur is just the same, except instead of adding a shadow and a highlight, you'r adding 2 highlights. one highlight is the lighter tone, the other is the white sheen. so it would be black solid base, lighter highlight toward light source, and then sheen. Sheens are tricky because they don't go above the hilgight, they are actually seperate from it, they might be even in the opposite angle like reflected light.

Most of the tones are only highlites anyway- I use a lot but the darker I get, the less area I use them on.
Anyway, I'm happy with how I do normal fur anyway. It's only black I don't like. But black isn't quite the same. I'd have to start black and put on a lighter shade, then an even lighter one- but after black is down, nothing else really wants to make it lighter, so I need to start light, but that makes it look odd- but I actually think I have come up with a way to do black anyway, I'll play with a bit and see what comes up.

Looks great, especially for a first try! I always find frontviews awkward, you pulled it off really well. The fur has so much texture to it, you have wonderful coloring skills.
As for the black fur, I heard somewhere that an undercoat of dark blue makes it look better? Good luck with finding a technique, black fur is incredibly hard.

Seriously? o.o Heh, flattered, really, but no, not just yet. Too much pressure, and there's too much I can't do well. However, if you have an idea, feel free to bring it up and depending on many factors I might just bring it to light. No guarantees, though It'd be just the same, only free, less chance of happening, and you don't get the hard copy XD

Holy crow! That looks amazing, for practice, this is pretty amazing! Wonderful work, the pose looks great and the details and colors and just amazing, really impressive work.
I don't know what to tell you about the black fur though, I can't really render fur that well traditionally. All I can say is maybe use multiple grays to build up the highlights and then so what you do for the fur texture.
