awsome, how did get the look of depth between the real skin and the layer beneath? It is another texture? Or did you use the burn tool?

ZOMGESSAY

Once again, I'll have a look at the technical side first, then at my own interpretation and improvements alike. I realise, though, that this probably is a very personal piece, so I'll try not to force my opinion onto you.

As for the technical bit; it seems like the lightsource on the face and underlying texture/writing seems to be a tad off. This could be a mistake on my side, but the shadow cast by the cracks seems off, as well as the missing shadow that should be cast by the hair. Next to that, the face itself seems a tad too bright (blurred softlight layer?).

Another issue I noticed at first glance, was the way you masked out the hair. A soft brush, if used at a too large size, can give the effect of stuff fading away, and that's what it seems to have done here. A real shame, since I've seen you do better masks with a suft brush before.

Now, as for my personal interpretation; It seems like a good example between an open and a closed personality. As the face is the most distinguished human feature, it is indeed the most feasile for such a manpiulation. However, a few things threw me off. The writing, first of all, seems like a Western standard translation of Hebrew religious writing (The Bible, to be exact) and I find it hard to grasp one finding religion underneath an out 'skin'. Then again - I'm an atheist, what do I know.

Another issue with interpretation is the eyes. In both textures, they seem busy and restless. I'd assume that when one is his/her true self, he/she would be more at peace. A less chatic reflection in the eyes would definitely increase that sense of peace.

That's about all, I guess. I hope it was of any use

this quite interesting actually, because I like the way that you showed her two faces, in this almost random, torn way. not like many others do, who just cut the faces into halves
plus, it is interesting that you put some text or lyrics into her face, that makes the viewer wonder what you tried to express with that, if perhaps you tried to display a particularly thoughtful character...?
technically there are some things that I would like to see improved, most of all the overexposed nose. overexposure is not easy to fix, because you usually have to overpaint the area. but you don't want a huge white blotch on the nose and forehad. you should also smooth out some parts, because apparently the photo is not of the best quality.
another thing, give it some more colours, the colour scheme is pretty narrow at the moment, mostly a lot of yellow.
I like how the hair frames the picture, but you will want to replace the darkness in the background my something and indicate some background there, even if it is only a rough sketch or something, but at the moment your figure seems to sort of float in space and is also badly cut out against the dark. so yeah, make a background and blend her in well and give her a proper shoulder edge
nonetheless, I think this is an overall nice piece, it just needs some more work and touch-ups

Daniel

Helen... you are simply amazing. You have given me so many comments of encouragement and support. I can't thank you enough. I think thanking you in one long comment is better then just going to each one and saying thank you because really... it wouldn't express my gratefullness to you. You have made my day. Thank you so much. *huggles* Hopefully I'll be in DigitalMedia soon and I'll express myself properly.

Much love forever and ever!

Helen-Baq In reply to Windcharmer [2007-02-02 19:52:18 +0000 UTC]

I don't know what I did to deserve such gratefulness, but I'll still take the huggles. I haven't been in chat much, lately, but I should be around this weekend. I've been tired and wanting to sleep a lot.

I think this would make a wonderful print. I'd buy it.

I like your interpretation of the theme. This manip looks quite good, I especially like the transition between skin and parchment (paper?), like it were peeling off at the edges.
Nice work. ^^

Windcharmer In reply to Manshi [2007-01-16 16:19:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I tried to make it look like paper. Haha. I guess it is kinda questionable. But thank you so much!

SenzaFallisce [2007-01-15 16:09:55 +0000 UTC]

Ah I've got what it might be! Maybe if you make the paper texture darker...like maybe give it some shadowns like the rest of the face has. That might be what it is. I Love the concept though. very nice!

Windcharmer In reply to SenzaFallisce [2007-01-16 18:03:18 +0000 UTC]

Its lovely,
The expression is great and the contrast with the pure white skin and dark background is also, but I would say that in the face, it needs to blended in more softly to give it a nice-er look, but over-all its beautiful; keep it up.

baseballkool In reply to baseballkool [2007-01-02 19:07:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes...But then again, what you have done to it, puts it into the horror section, so it is prefect on its own.

Windcharmer In reply to baseballkool [2007-01-02 18:04:58 +0000 UTC]

So that the skin has a softer look compared to the dark parts of her face?

Thank you very much.

Sometimes trying something new takes us out of our element...doesn't mean it isn't a great piece. Maybe it just has to grow on you?
I think the concept's really cool..at first I thought it was a map on her face.
