I am so glad I decided to watch you! When I saw the thumbnail for this my heart stopped for a second! I hope to see one of these, mainly because apparently they were common in Montana, but I wasn't interested in birds at the time and I don't remember ever seeing them . It's a goal of mine to see one in Indiana, which according to my "birds of prey in the Midwest guide" they do live here. Any advice on finding any birds of prey?

Look for open fields. I live in Idaho, and we have kestrels everywhere, especially along the highway where homes have at least an acre of property, or full agricultural land, although I see them in town, usually near open lots with wild weeds growing so they can find bugs and mice. Just the other day, I had a kestrel flying alongside the car in the middle of town, in a residential neighborhood with a young starling in his claws! Kestrels will often hover over a field, or sit on power/ telephone lines watching the field below. Other hawks, like red-tails will perch in a tree (often a dead one, so they have an unobstructed view) overlooking a field. Or, watch for high, slowly spiraling forms.

This is amazing! did you use a reference?

Not directly - I usually consult many many references to make sure I have the plumage right. I work best if I have lots of different photos around me so I get an overall feel of the bird.

aaah the details are just perfect c:! a pair of these guys started nesting in an old pigeon-built nest in the eaves of the roof across the alley... but they stopped showing up and I never saw any babies, I guess it didn't work out? :[ anyways, I'll miss seeing their keen little glares you captured so perfectly here :]

Lucky! They are on the threatened list in my state (Connecticut) because all our fields are being built on or reforested!

really? I wonder if they're threatened here in TN =o
Last year a baby fell out and I tried to put it back. They had 3 babies that year.

Amazing! Your art inspires me sooo much! (I must mention that you are my idol in traditional bird art!) Love the details you get with the paint! I can't do that as well as you; with me I can only get those details with ink ^^"
