Just
Just go do research before giving your OC a mental illness/disorder
(I just realized the description said that but still)

as a person professionally diagnosed with ocd and autism, i have to say you are correct. we go through it everyday, and suddenly you have this inaccurate oc that has "autism" and "bipolar" disorder and literally every single one?
that is offensive. if you just go by stereotypes, guess what? your oc won't be supported. it'll be looked down.
and, if people try to educate you, don't scream at them "OMG YOU DON'T HAVE IT STOP TRYING TO BULLY ME".
honestly, they're just trying to help you. you should not say that you have autism because of a stupid quiz.
when your parents tell you, THAN you know it's real.

i'm assuming that the stamp refers to incorrect interpretations of the illness
- if you make the character's illness true to the actual illness and not as a fashion acessory
hope this helps!

MelodyGlow In reply to AspiePie [2015-09-30 02:53:10 +0000 UTC]
technically it is classified as one ~www.google.com.au/search?clienβ¦
though its just a different state- it does not limit people from most things
i have schizophrenia which is also a disorder
having these things does not mean that we are abnormal, it just means that we think differently

I don't think people do it to be cool; if people give their OCs disorders and things like that, its very likely that they are looking for representation.
Also, it doesn't exactly help your argument that you compared having a mental disorder to having cancer, and of course your use of the word "disease"...

you can't tell just from looking at their pictures lots of the time? and its not like theres a perfect set in stone symptoms and even if you do use some reason symptoms you can be disrespectful.
not to mention if someones calling it an accessories in order to cope with how horrible it is just let them. i joke about it sometimes since it lessens the pain it doesnt mean im faking.

I get mad at people who make their Sparkledogs have autism, and 99% of the time it is overused stereotypes. Not all autistic people have lives that are endless tragedies and not all autistic people are stupid. I certainly don't fit into the common stereotype of an autistic person.Β

if I ever do make an oc with a mental illness I would try my best to research more information about it.
and I would also try to not make it as stereotypical either. however it's never cute to even have those things
in the first place.

As a person who suffers from Pure O, I thank you. People who see mental disorders as "fashion" and "cool" are completely ignorant and oblivious of how much damage a mental disorder can do to a persons well being. They won't be boasting and thinking it is cool when they suddenly have a mental disorder. They'll will finally understand the pain and suffering that REAL victims of a mental disorder(s) go through.

Anime, Manga and Video Game writers are just as guilty of this as the fans are. They make a mentally ill character just so they can be sympathetic, only to get over it within a few days. Hello, that's not how it works.
The worst offender is PTSD. Characters have PTSD, only to get over it magically. Sorry, but the power of love and friendship doesn't cure everything. Sometimes, you need to get actual help and therapy, because sometimes, things like that you will hardly ever get over.
Speaking of, every time I see or hear about how love and friendship can cure everything moral, I could just scream my head off.

Boschian-Fantasies In reply to Robotic-Mind [2014-05-19 06:25:57 +0000 UTC]
Well, there was Metroid: The Other M and the Metroid Manga. Seemed like Samus' PTSD came out of nowhere and was resolved just like that. That's two examples.
But you do have to admit, a lot of anime and manga is rather poorly written Mary Sue fanfics for weeaboo losers.

im sure there are people who know that mental illnesses aren't "accessories". some of my characters have mental illnesses (except I did research and all that) but I agree you shouldn't just give it to a character just to do it, one should actually put a story behind it or something at least. Characters wouldn't be characters if there wasn't something up with 'em. But its gotta be done right.

I hate is when I tell people I have ADHD. This is the story every time.
Me: Oh, I have ADHD, so excuse me if I get off-topic or go a little crazy.
Person: OMG I HAVE IT TOO CHEEZ NINJA FART NOODLES NARWHAL WATER BOTTLE SEE IM SO RANDOM RAINBOWZ AND SHIZ.
Me: *is running away to find smarter people to talk with.*
ADHD is not only about being random.

THIS. This so much. I have ADHD, and here's an example of what I have to go through on the internet ridiculously often:
Me: I have ADHD.
Person: OMG ME TOO!!! I'M ALWAYZ REALLY RANDUMZ AND I LIKE PIE AND I NEVER FIT IN AND IM A WOLF AND ADHD MAKES ME MOR CREATIVE AND IM SO GLAD I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE WHO CAN BE A SPESHUL SNOWFLAKE WITH ME!!! RAINBOWZ!!!!!!!
Me: Nevermind... *runs off to go find normal people*

My stephmother told me that if I have ADHD she would have it too. Because everything 'oh yeah. I do this too. And I have this too.' Sadly one side of my family doesn't understand it and completely bashed me into the floor with words once I told them about the medication I was going to take. My father told me: nope, you don't have this. I do not believe it. And so on there are many people in this world who treat certain things lightly or as if you are stupid or can't do shit in life because of it. So yeah. Sorrg long silly story. I agree on your comment.

Stuff like that is so fucking annoying )8
I've also tried, when telling someone that I had anxiety disorder, they started being all like: "THATS SO AWESUME! ITS SO CUTE HOW YOU GUYS ARE SO SHY AND GET ALL SCARED AND STUFF! LOL."
I don't see what's so 'super kawaii desu desu' about me crawling over in a corner, with my hands in front of my eyes and start crying of fear and stress while beginning to hypterventilate when I get one of my break downs ._.
And about ADHD as you mentenioned, I just hate when seeing people thinking they have ADHD because they are just a little bit hyper sometimes... I don't know that much of ADHD myself, but just through common sense, I know that it's not just about being 'HYPER AND RANDUMZ LUL!'

I only have an issue when the 'bisexual' character only shows interest in one gender. Like, a so called 'bisexual' girl or woman who still only flirts with men. That's when I get suspicious it's only be used to make them 'spezzul~'
