Alex sighed, his hands shaking. It hadn't been very long, but it felt like ages since the last time he'd lunged a horse. Things were...complex...in his world. Henley was a constant, but with his body stuck in a wheelchair (Alex's opinion on the matter, not Henley's. Henley saw it as freedom, which Alex couldn't wrap his head around.), it was difficult to have him nearby during training. So today it was just Silver, the Obertaurer stallion, and Alex. For some short time, Magnus had been taking care of Silver, but only because Alex's loss of limb had prevented him (mentally, mostly) from riding. And now, he'd been handed the horse, well, on a silver platter, so to speak. Magnus had refused to work with the beast, because Ahzdaya, Silver as he was called around the barn, refused to work with Magnus. Magnus wasn't his bonded, and Alex was the only one he trusted.
So here they were.
Silver snorted softly, as he nudged his handler gently. Alex patted the horse's neck, and smiled to himself. Never could trust anything in this ol' world, but the scent of a horse's breath, and its warm whiskery tickles against his face were a sure-fire way to pick up his spirits. The rider turned his attention back to his mount. Silver seemed almost concerned with Alex's well-being, and the man had to shake it off, try to focus on himself. He turned his attention to Silver, and clucked his tongue. The horse moved along, as he was asked to.
They started at a walk, to warm up. Silver moved slowly, yet easily, through his paces. Alex was enamored by the way that the horse moved. There was something amazing about it, for sure. Silver had always been a good mount to Alex, and he was thrilled to be working with the horse in the early morning light. It was cold, but Alex had on a short-sleeved shirt, not minding the nip in the air.
Of course, Silver didn't mind the feeling either; the mountains of Obertauren were freezing, and he was used to the cold that his kind was bred for. His breath misted around him in clouds as he trotted, now, at Alex's command. He kept his head down, not prancing, just doing the work. He was utilitarian in that manner, to say the least.
"Good boy," Alex chimed in, and Silver flicked an ear towards his handler. The Obertaurer seemed overjoyed to have his original handler back, and if he could have grinned, he would have. He would do anything for Alex; walk through fire, for Alex, if that was needed. But luckily, it was just a bit of slow trotting that was needed today, so he didn't have to fling himself on hot coals to prove his loyalty.
He would have, though, for the record.
Eventually, Alex and Ahzdaya came to a halt together, Alex dizzy from turning so many small circles. He patted the Ober's neck, and grinned at his horse. "Well done," Alex told the horse softly. The Obertaurer pressed his cheek to Alex's, and then his muzzle, some sort of horsie best-friend kiss. Alex couldn't help but laugh.
"All right, all right, let's get you in," Alex said, as the cold began to catch up with him in earnest.
