He looks like he's in pain. Something is really upsetting him from within. It's almost a guilty look of someone who has to tell you some very bad news.

It's the "struggle within." He made a promise to always watch over someone, to protect them, and in doing so Jake keeps being forced to make lesser of two evils-type decisions. "If I don't take on this job this guy over here will and he's a sadistic, evil fuck." That sort of thing. He's become a bad guy, he knows it, but he's so far down the rabbit hole there's no coming back. So he keeps playing the cards as they're dealt to him.

Well, every situation where's two big evils, it's hard on the psychology. It's hard to come back from such decisions. If one doesn't have the means to "break the wheel" one can go really nuts.

I got the idea from reading and watching news stories about human trafficking between Mexico and the US, illegal immigrants, the involvement of gangs, biker clubs, cartels and then wondering, "How does someone even get involved with that? How do they justify it to themselves?" Because very few people see themselves as evil, even when their actions are, and even fewer people really are 'evil'...

I guess some people don't even think about that concept. They think about what they get for their actions, trying to stay comfortable. And those that do might be involved in a series of justifications.
