Description This is the result of hours of planning, manipulation, and cunning. I took the lame train that came in the Toy Story 3 box and cranked it up to 11. Also, my take on the train from Kalamari Desert in Mario Kart 64 in a realistic style.

The original (google it) was much shorter, clashing, fragile, and just childish. I tore it apart an rebuilt it from scratch, and this is what I got. The cowcatcher and pistons are now attached to engine (with an elongated boiler) rather than to the pilot, so they don't swivel anymore. I changed the smokestack out for a black balloon stack and came up with an ingenious way to keep it on with no other supporting structures. The train is also 10 studs wide now, 2 wider than the default size of Lego trains. It also has a matching scratch-built tender that houses a motor and "firewood". Following up is one of the three passenger cars that are also of original design.

All in all, my best train to date of the L gauge. Just need to get connecting rods on and it'll be complete.

Not in a train, not in a tree, not in a car, Sam Let me be! Not in a box, not with a fox, not with a mouse, not in a house...Not here or there, not anywhere!

And by motorized I mean I used a power functions motor assembly on the driving rods.

I really like the color scheme you created for the tender, you have enhanced this set magnificently. I bought this one my self a few months back and motorized it.

Ooh, that looks so nice.

I have that set, and it looks nice at first, until recently I modified it, along with parts from other LEGO sets, usually including the LEGO CITY PF Cargo Train with a yellow locomotive, mainly set 7939.

I really like this. I came up with a story about a 4-4-0 named William, and his is different than regular 4-4-0s. His funnel is long and narrow, and his tender is as big as the rest of him. The reason for his tender is that when he was "born" he was a test to see if he could go farther without fueling stops on the Steam Rail Line. I however cannot drw trains well...

I also have the Emerald Night set, but no track.

I don't know if you saw the story I posted on the more recent picture (with connecting rods), but stories are fun to make up about trains.

I do not have the Emerald Night set, my opinion on it is rather mixed. I like the engine, but I liked the 9v trains better as the batteries just don't last in the new sets. Also, Lego's trains are always so European, it would be nice to see some variation in design. But I do see it as a step in the right direction.

Oh, and BTW, to MANY of these earliest comments I posted, when I say indeed a 4-4-0 steam powered locomotive, and about the tenderless locomotive thing, I would meant to say.... a tender engine.

Thus, a tender engine is... you know what it is.

Um, alright.

All that, and I still have NO clue or ideas why couldn't they add the tender to the engine on their Toy Story 3 train merchandises, even though it's supposed to be a 4-4-0 steam locomotive of something........

Also, I wonder why some kids don't seems to care about steam locomotive tenders?
Everyone do like steam trains, especially they like how they carries tender loaded with fuel like coal, lumber, or even oil, and water!
LOL

Err..... never mind.
Gotta go.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Is it really that hard to add a tender? It really does help add a cool factor. Alone, it's just not as neat. I mean, even the train in Mario Kart 64 had a tender, and they had limited space in the game because of a low polygon count, yet the added it anyway! Now that's dedication!

I really love it!
Great Job!

Well, not really......
I like it!

You suppose this LEGO 4-4-0 can handle curves?
And plus,
I'm pretty sure even one of you curious ones could answer one little question.....

Since the locomotive from any Toy Story 3 train set merchandise is indeed a 4-4-0, there's only one problem....

Why couldn't LEGO, or Geotrax, or even Hornby add the DARN TENDER!?
Without the tender, this 4-4-0 steam engine ain't going anywhere, even further.

Unless it a tank engine, or even it a FREAKIN' CARTOON STYLE TOY TRAIN SET OR SUMETHING!

Sorry, I just got overreacted, that's all.

For Geotrax who made a Toy Story 3 train set, it was named the Toy Story 3 Exploding Bridge set.
[link]

For Hornby who made also made a Toy Story 3 train set, indeed the same crummy thing. No tender to 4-4-0 = FAIL.

[link]

For Le- never mind. Saw it.
Thanks, lad.

wirelesswizard64 In reply to Angelcuti [2010-09-12 18:51:56 +0000 UTC]

Money, me lad. It's all about the money! Kids don't seem to care about tenders, and corporations can get away with not adding it in. Although...Sid Mier's Railroads! (virtual train game) didn't come with tenders either...lazy jerks. Thank god someone made a modd that put them in.

I have no idea why Lego wouldn't offer one, and I have no idea why they don't offer a version under Lego trains- all the ones they offer are British and/or electric/diesel. Ah well, gives me a chance to be creative and make it unique.

And yes, it handled curves just fine, as both the drivers and boogie rotated. Now that it has connecting rods, I had to redesign it, but it still takes them just fine.

That stack design is beautiful. Digging the headlight, too.

Certainly a worthy take on the American in Lego!

Thanks! I've got some 4 1x7 liftarm pieces flying in from Texas so that I can complete the side rods. I cannot believe that out of the eight five-gallon buckets of Legos I have, I don't have a single one of them!

Atticus-W In reply to wirelesswizard64 [2010-09-06 23:14:46 +0000 UTC]

Daw, yeah, go figure.

I made a pretty good replica of "Chuffy" from Banjo-Tooie and used these interesting rods with a "+" cross-section and technic ball bearing joints at each end. I forget exactly, but those might have only been 5 studs long, though... but they do have a clean look to them.

wirelesswizard64 In reply to Atticus-W [2010-09-07 03:50:05 +0000 UTC]

Got a picture of Chuffy? I adore that train and was ecstatic to see such an impressive model in-game. I've experimented with the + bars, but it just doesn't look right. Also it keeps jamming in the wheel well base. Trial and error, I suppose.

Atticus-W In reply to wirelesswizard64 [2010-09-07 04:26:40 +0000 UTC]

Hm unfortunatly I don't have a picture of my Chuffy at the moment. I'll try to get one for you. Maybe after I finish building his "wagon."

Also, this is the rod piece I was thinking of: [link] --just one part. 6-studs long, though.

wirelesswizard64 In reply to Atticus-W [2010-09-07 05:19:42 +0000 UTC]

I remember these from the Time Machine series! I tried this out on an earlier prototype- it is indeed a clean look, but you can't have more than one on a peg at once, right?

I'd love to see a pic of Chuffy. Looking around at different people's conceptions of steam in Lego is interesting, namely for getting connecting rods to function!

It sounds entirely too much like your nickname from IT; it's a little disconcerting. But the "shire" at the end sort of makes up for that.
Yes, I think I do like it.

The gap is seven studs large, a piece Lego doesn't make in Technic. Either I'm going to weld two together, or have to come up with a different solution. I can't move the wheels closer because of the wheel wells, and I can't move them out because it ruins the image.

Sampug394 In reply to wirelesswizard64 [2010-09-05 03:06:34 +0000 UTC]

I'll bet you can do something with those '+' shaped rods to make up the difference

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wirelesswizard64 In reply to Sampug394 [2010-09-05 04:03:17 +0000 UTC]

I tried something to that effect. But then the wheels wouldn't spin because the pegs holding both had too firm a grip. Would shaving them down help? I'm all ears.
