Background:

Tl;dr: A viscount in England low on his fortunes decides to raise them by becoming a merchant. He crashes, is rescued by pirates, and eventually becomes one. After their captain dies he’s voted to be new captain, and becomes a terror of the seas. He challenges a fellow pirate to a duel one day, accidentally kills him, and is cursed by the man’s lover to be turned to stone for centuries.

Eamon was born in England, the first son of the Viscount of Foxheaton and his loving wife. Life was idyllic until his mother died of tuberculosis when he was 5 years old. Despite remarrying out of duty, and even having another son with his new wife, his father never recovered from her death and began to turn to alcohol and gambling.

Eamon, his younger brother, and his stepmother did their best to make do with what they had, but poor luck and excessive gambling began to wear away at the fortunes, and soon the house began to decay, and servants and friends began to abandon the doomed aristocrats. They could do little more than watch former fortunes crumble around them. Until, when Eamon turned 23, his father died.

Immediately him, his step-mother, and his brother began discussing how they could salvage, and perhaps regain, what they had left. Deciding to take up mercantile ventures, they mustered what was left of their fortune, and planned to sell goods to the North American Colonies, and having gained nautical knowledge from a family friend, Eamon decided to travel with the merchant ship himself.

Things went well for the better part of a year. They had managed to make 3 successful voyages, and Eamon found he loved the sea-- preferring to leave management of the house to his mother and younger brother rather than take up the responsibility of those duties himself. Those responsibilities were looming however, and this fourth voyage was beginning to look like the last he could take before ignoring them much longer. Their luck was not to last this time however, and on the second week a storm pushed them off course, then his blue blood attracted a monster from the sea.

It attacked, and much of his ship and crew were destroyed. Him and 3 others barely managed to make it to an island on a lifeboat. They stayed there for a few more weeks, losing hope before a ship drifted by and decided to stop, rescuing the 4 hapless castaways.

Their joy at being rescued didn’t last long however, as soon they began to realize that their saviors were pirates, who, after the loss of a few crewmembers, could use some extra hands on deck. They were worked hard at first, but Eamon began to respect their free way of life, and eventually became good friends with many of them, even becoming an official member of their crew.

A few years later their captain was killed by a cursed artifact, and Eamon, having won respect after many battles, was voted to become the next captain. Home had been almost forgotten, and the blood red sails of his ship became a sign of dread for many. He lived like this for a long time, but one day, after stopping in a pirate town, he hears foul gossip about his brother and challenges the man to a duel. Though he had planned to make any injury non-lethal, he accidentally kills the man, and his cursed by his lover who is a witch to be turned to stone for centuries onward.
