Description Dog Day Cicada is a macro photo of an unusual, rare and beautiful insect I found near my patio at night. My patio seems to be a place for every insect under the moon and stars to gather. The mating song of the male cicadas at night is so loud that it sounds like we live in a virtual jungle. The "dog day" label comes from the fact that they make their brief appearance only during late summer when it is the hottest time of the year.

On first look this seemed to just be one huge ugly bug. How wrong I was. As time goes on I am amazed how much beauty is found in the insect world. This cicada (Tibicen auletes) is no exception.

Several cultures, such as the ancient Chinese, regarded these insects as powerful symbols of rebirth. Maybe a good omen has been sent our way.
