Description Heres a render of my completed Shadow Cat model. Its done to generate the normal maps for a mod i'm part of.
Though its not textured as yet, i plan to learn normal mapping and get used to doing it before trying something this complicated.

WOW! The detail is simply amazing!!!

If you don't mind me asking, what program did you use? And how did you get all this detail done!? Help a fellow 3D Artist???

Much appreciated! You've some pretty awesome stuff too!

I used 3DSMax7, and all the details are modelled individually.... but i used RL military vehicles and the work of other mecha artists for inspiration.

Oh you use Max too, awesome... If you don't mind me asking and helping me out... What did you do to get to that level of control with the geometry? Is this Polygon modelling? Lol, as you can see, I'm really curious as to how to do this amazing level of detail! hehe

Yep, its good ol' polygon modelling.

As for level of control... well i use booleans fairly often to cut stuff, especially round holes in surfaces but it means alot of tedious cleaning up lol. Otherwise its just all the normal poly-pushing techniques.

As for detailing, however, more detailed models become possible with every new project. You need to train yourself to have an eye for detail, and get as many references as you can. Real military equipment, machinery innards, even mundane stuff like refrigerator hinges can be sources of inspiration for detailing. The most important thing is still practice though. Hope this helps.

Oh thanks for the insight, I'm sure gonna start looking into all this when I need some detailed stuff... But for now, my next batch of models are gonna be rather smooth and clean-cut so I'm not gonna need to go crazy on the details... But thanks anyway man!

You're welcome. Thanks for the complement, too. The geometry is just my style. Unfortunately this makes people and pretty much everything else thats not a machine almost impossible to draw using my technique (i'm working on changing this). More to come.

what system did you use?

MAX + Skylights?

if you used skylights, up the amount of rays.
you are getting some random discolouration on the ground.

Yep, MAX & Skylights. I kept the rays down since it increases the render time alot, and doesn't show a major difference... but i'll try it with models with more stuff on it thanks.

I use the default 3D Max light tracer for the scene (advanced lighting->light tracer), with a skylight and an omni for brightness (you might need to lower the intensity alot).

Be careful tho, it might take a very long time to render.
