A Green Man head incorporating a Deadly Nightshade design in the Foliate Style of Green Man head.

Traditionally, Green Men are architectural designs, carved into buildings and churches and wood and the like. To some, they are a pagan fertility god. I have taken my own interpretation of their potential, and created a Green (Wo)Man head as a miniature idol to a specific plant spirit.

This piece contains dried leaves and pieces from a hand-raised Atropa belladonna plant. Powdered leaf is mixed in with some of the paint, imbuing the piece with the spirit of the plant inside and out.

Going on the plant's name Belladonna (Italian for 'beautiful woman' due to the berries of the plant being used as eye dilation drops, a sign of beauty), I created a beautiful but poisonous woman, her huge black eyes staring imperiously out of a collection of leaves, shiny berries and tiny nightshade flowers.
