I've been down this road. All I can say is do some careful research on publishing before doing anything. You wouldn't believe the amount of scams and bad publishers that are out there, and the publishing business is so complex that there are lawyers dedicated to understanding literal, visual book contracts and publishing laws.
This blog can be of some good help titled "Writers Beware".[link]
If you have questions about a publisher or agency, you can ask this blog about them and they will check them out and/or tell you if they are save to work with. With the storms in the South-East U.S., where the bloggers live, it might be hard to reach them at this time.

Here's some vary good advice from learning this business after making some mistakes. One, good traditional publishers NEVER ask you for money unless you're going into self publishing but that's not too recommended if you don't want the burden of publishing(yet I've heard it's getting easier everyday with some services). Two, If you're going to talk to a literacy agent, never sigh a contract if they ask for money in anyway(they might at least charge a small fee to edit your novel for spelling and grammar if it's needed, this can be okay). The publishers pay the literacy agents when they accept a book, not the Author. Also research the agent and make sure they have a good track record and reputation. Three, Print on Demand is not really top notch yet, and normally the more questionable services, publishers use this tech, be careful.

Bottomline, the Publishing business may look innocent enough, but there are some real criminals and lowlifes on the prowl behind the scenes. Be careful, I can't stress that enough.XD
