Description ...Scented Candle for Christmas

This looks like it should be for Halloween rather than Christmas eh? hmmmm that would make a good film XD

I don't normally say this but please full view so you can see all the little details



This is for who I think is the best Scarecrow artist ever! I haven't actually drawn a full body picture of Jonathan Crane as Scarecrow before so thought this would be the perfect time! This is like...um...my totally unoriginal original design lol I really love the Year One Scarecrow, especially those sexy gloves, sleeves and straps so had to include aspects of those (and yes for some bizarre reason I kept the pumpkin pin too lol). I wanted his top to look like a customised straight jacket and wanted as many buckles as possible because I imagine you'd hear him clink before you saw him which I think would be very creepy! Like Marley's ghost! I've made him VERY tall and thin so he looks literally all straw and bones and though I gave him Y1 gloves I think he's a very tactile person so probably has the Arkham Asylum and Sale gloves tucked away in a drawer at home too!

I gave him a fork instead of a scythe because I think scythes are a bit Grim Reaper, I grew up in a gardening / farm area and basically love the imagine of him dragging a fork about, making sparks on the pavement behind him!

Oh yeah, and if he offers you to sniff the candle...don't do it!

Haha, very nice work indeed! I like the storybook illustration technigque here, all the little details, too!

The teeny spider and grass stalks are just adorable, then you eye goes down to the blood and it gets a bit darker... I enjoy the limited colour palette and wide white areas, nice work on creating a style. The swirls of the toxin look cool (for some reason they remind me of that Nightmare before Christmas movie, or what it's name was...) and Crane's arm hairs that are basically crisscrossing lines made me crack up.

I love how much thought you put into the character design--especially the fact that he'd clink before you saw him. There's nothing quite as unsettling as a noise that you can't identify coming out of nowhere in the middle of the night! Especially in Gotham, I'd wager. Lovely, lovely work.

kickarse stuff, I like the spartan background, works well with the picture.

The blood on the pitchfork is a nice touch too.

I agree with you regarding the pitchfork, it's a really cool image, dragging it along, and I think it fits his character more too.

Gahh! Thank you so so so much! Seriously, I had THE most awful day today. I honestly didn't even feel like making a quick go through of my inbox when I came home today... but I'm glad I did! Thank you so much, this was a total surprise for me!

(Ohh, just you wait until I get some time to do my Christmas pressie for you my dear!)

Anyway, I think your totally original unoriginal design is awesome. (Certainly a lot more original than my design, at least.) I absolutely adore the little feather addition you made to his hat. I'm surprised it hasn't been thought up before (to my knowledge) to be quite frankly! It's actually a pretty practical design if you think about it... I mean, it can double as BOTH a decoration and a writing utensil!

By the way, I'm glad I'm not the only one who switches between green and orange when it comes to drawing Crane's fear toxin. I know that green is sort of the uh, "standard" color for fear toxin (well, for all mad scientist concoctions for that matter...) but I think orange just compliments him so neatly! Don't you agree? XD;

hehe I think I saw one piece of fanart with feathers in but it was actually inspired by a wedding hat I saw lol I so would have bought the thing if I was still working!

Yes, I was saying to The G how I thought green was over done! I mean really I bet Jonny's toxin is 100% colourless, odourless and tasteless however for the sake of us artists he dyes it orange - after all orange is the colour of pumpkins!

Gosh, I'm really not all that great... Well, at least not recently. Recently I've been awfully terrible at getting back to peoples comments/replies!

Anyway, I'm glad I discovered you as well. It's not often I get a watcher that's quite like you.

Oh, and now that you mention it... His toxin would be color/odor/tasteless! I mean, it makes perfect sense practicality wise.... ; However, for the sake of us artists he dyes it orange. How amiable of him.

And yes, I love the spider. I actually draw him with a spider quite often lol. I'm not sure what we could name it though... I keep thinking "Charlotte" but I think that's just too... obvious.

This makes me wonder though... Is Scarecrow's pet magpie a girl or a boy?

I always thought girl before but... I'm not sure when or if they ever specified its' gender...

hehe I believe you! It's okay - at the end of my introduction course the head of year inferred I was a little...eccentric...but in a good way XD I came home with such a big head after everything nice she said to me - I have no idea how I will live up to the high standard I have apparently set myself :S

Ah yes, sometimes I find myself being a bit eccentric sometimes as well. Especially when it comes to talking about/doing art.

Sometimes it makes me wonder though, if it scares my watchers away, or lures them in?

And I know that feeling too. I have an awful tendency to set high expectations for myself. So more often than not I'm feeling dreadfully overwhelmed. :S

That's really quite awesome. Those crisp colours and the white background...nice.

I love how you did the smoke coming out of the little pumpkin too. It's so stylish!

I think this is a great example of a picture that concentrates on what's important and doesn't try to cram in unnecessary information.

I was going to colour the background but none of the combinations looked right - as you said - they distracted from the main focus!

lol I made the smoke orange because it's nearly always green green is apparently the colour of fear but I say, hell, let's make it pumpkin orange XD
