Description Hi.

You know I asked the ZOO Brno about the condition of the pack of Artic wolves ().
Today I got the reply - fast, gentle, full of information... and very saddening at the same time.

Atila, the alpha male of the pack, died of old age.
You know how I loved this fantastic wolf, who trully had a character, so you can imagine how I feel.
This is the last good photo I took of him...

His death caused the current situation of the pack: wolves are stressed, because they lost a leader, which caused the change of hierarchy and lot, lot of stress, so wolves lose their fur and so... The tests did not prove any bacteria or parasites. So the cause of the problem is the death of alpha.

Atila, I will miss you. I will never forget you as I spent so many wonderful moments with you.
It was great to watch you rising your puppies, to see you just running through the enclosure, to see you active, happy, but also lazy. It was fun to watch you chasing your females and how they also chased you during the mating season. It was fun to see you hiding behind the hill when a doggy came closer. You will always be the one of three wolves who were the first arctic beauties which founded the Brno's pack. And you will always live in many pups you've fathered.

Goodbye, my sweet Atila. My funny beloved Atila.
I am crying now

Hi, sorry to hear that, sadly I'm not that familiar with the local pack, but I have a few pictures of them from 2011. Could You please look at them and confirm/deny if Atila is one of them? They're in my gallery, folder: animal photography, should be near top of the first page 3 composed pictures from 7 photographs (i have some more and also some movies, but they're not so good) ratshaman.deviantart.com/galle… . If You have the time of course. Thanks. And I hope the rest will get better soon.

This is terrible news. I never knew Atila personally, but I feel like I got to know him fairly well from your photos, and I really liked him! I did a few paintings of him from your photos, as you know, and I have a few of them hanging around the house. I can't imagine how you must feel, woxys, but I will miss him, too! It's sad that he was only 10 - I have read of captive wolves living to be around 14 or so.

RIP Atila. Sad, that he died but also sad that the zoo denies/does not accept the fact, that the other wolves have mites. As stressing as this might be for the whole pack and immunesystem-lowering, that does not cause the whole fur to fall out and body to itch so terribly. They should quickly act against the mites.

huh, Lunchi, they say that the several tests simply did not comfirm any parasite. They were trying to find it, but they did not I somehow trust those who see those wolves in person, you know? I hope they know how to do their job

Lunchi In reply to woxys [2013-07-04 16:28:49 +0000 UTC]

yeah I understand. Its just weird that they feel so itchy that they scratch themselves until they are bloody. I find it hard to imagine that it only has to do with stress. I can imagine that their stress makes their immune system weak and thus let parasites of any sort have a better chance to infect them but to be so naked and bloody totally reminds me of mites as some other dev-art-members here mentioned.
I could think that they did tests where the mites were not visible (hair collection/blood/stool)... and they still are there. It happend with my budgies in 2009. I had to give 3 stool samples until the vet found the eggs of the roundworms. They were simply not always available in the stool.

I do not know, but I am a reasonable human and when I am very very stressed over something, I have also pretty afwul physical results and yeah, I sometime scratch myself a lot

Try reading a poem called "The Rainbow Bridge" it's a very good one. I think it will help you feel better. I am happy that the pack is not ill though.

sorry to hear this. I love Arctic Wolves. But look on the bright side. He had pups and the parents teach their pups how to hunt, fight, and all sorts of wolf things. He might have rubbed off on them too. It would be like he was still there. But he is in a better place.

My friend how deeply I identify with your feelings right now! Wolf Park has lost 6 in approximately the past 6 months, two of which were my favorite boys Tristan and his son Ruedi. Ruedi's death was a tragic accident in which he drown; he was only 8. I literally sat here and wailed when I heard the news on those two. And cried for hours! I still cry. I had known Tristan since my first photo shoot at Wolf Park when he was about 1 year old. He was almost 15 at the time of his death from cancer. So many years of friendship spent with him, being in with the pack and him on photo shoots, etc. The same with his son Ruedi. When you have such a personal bond with these great creatures, the loss is truly great because we've lost, not just an animal that we admire, but we've also lost a furry friend that we've come to love. My heart goes out to you and I grieve with you!
