Description

Cover art that I created for Draumr Publishing's anthology Leading Ladies: Four Fairy Tales Retold.

I don't often delve into the style of Art Nouveau, but it seemed fitting for the requested theme. This was my third cover for Draumr and my favorite so far - I really had a lot of fun with it. The central figure's pose was inspired (with great respect) by the work of Alphonse Mucha, yet designed to reflect the womanly, zaftig proportions of the anthology's collective heroines.

Hey there,

My name is Karen (dedanaan on here) and my pen name is Kate Devlin (my mother's maiden name). I'm not sure if you had a chance to read the stories in this anthology, but I wanted to tell you that your cover is amazing and the character is almost exactly how I see Seanin (from my story, Seanin and the Sleeping Prince).

Thanks again for drawing an amazing cover, and I just wanted to add that I love your art.

Thanks,

Karen

This is gorgeous! I love her face and the overall style of this. The highlighting on her dress is really pretty, and it is quite flowy. I really like all the details. Nice work.

Thank you! It was a real challenge to try and balance the client's request for the figure to be amply proportioned, yet delicate to suit the fantasy theme.

Hey, look, a fantasy character who isn't teenaged and body-pierced!

Thundering herds of them, moving across the plains, trampling everything in sight under their huge feet in gigantic sneakers. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with them, of course, but I do like to keep the art ecology a bit varied.

WrensHollow In reply to Tizrak [2006-06-06 18:46:09 +0000 UTC]

A great description - what is it with those big sneakers anyway? I'm more the casual slip on deck shoe type.

I don't know what it is with the shoes. I real the occasional superhero comic, and one character (Impulse, a spinoff of the Flash) has shoes that are considerably bigger than his head. His feet must be enormous to get all that traction, I guess.

Still, that's better than many of the female superheroes, where its a different pair of body parts that are considerably bigger than their heads. All they have to do is turn around and *pow* the villains are out cold!

Amen to that. I never ceased to be amazed by the female SF characters built like Dolly Parton in zero-G. My friends and I used to joke about how many of them not only were insanely top heavy, but their waists were so dinky by comparison we were sure they'd snap in half in a high wind. It looked like someone had squeezed them like a tube of toothpaste and shoved all of their internal organs up into their chest. I mean, I don't mind curvaceous women, but damn people - keep them in proportion!!

My wife and I have an issue of Batman which is set in an alternate world where Batman is actually a woman. She's shown doing some acrobatic moves which, due to each individual breast being about twice the diameter of her head, would probably snap her in two as you mentioned. Quite amusing in a bizarre sort of way.

There are some artists here who draw similar things. They apparently find it erotic - I just think it looks kind of silly (if merely immoderate) or downright sick (if taken to true extremes). Ah well - to each their own, or somesuch. Personally I think Sigourney Weaver or Milla Jovovich are far more sexy-looking than a Dolly Parton in zero-G.

Absolutely - Milla is fantastic!

Tizrak In reply to WrensHollow [2006-06-08 23:43:30 +0000 UTC]

We've been spotting her in movies all over the place, and she never looks the same way twice. 'Hey, is that Milla?' 'Maybe ... it's hard to tell ... check the credits on the computer.' 'Yes, it is her!'

Just think of the difference between her in _Resident Evil_ vs. _The Fifth Element_. Of course, anyone looks different when wearing raggedy-anne hair, but still ...

WrensHollow In reply to Tizrak [2006-06-09 00:19:26 +0000 UTC]

I adore Milla - ever since I first heard her album "The Divine Comedy". She's got a great voice and really compelling style. A lot of people forget she started out as a model and singer before making it big in acting.

(Though to date, The Fifth Element is still one of my favorite guilty-pleasure films )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tizrak In reply to WrensHollow [2006-06-09 12:34:04 +0000 UTC]

I didn't even *know* she started as a singer, so I couldn't possibly have forgotten it. I'll have to check out some of her music.

We watch lots of guilty-pleasure films ... Primarily bad monster films, trying to predict them as we go. 'And when the open the door, the giant komodo that couldn't possibly have gotten into the building without smashing down walls and making lots of noise will be there and bite one of them in half!' 'Which one?' 'Her, she has smaller breasts and isn't being set up as the love interest.' *creak* *scream* *crunch* 'Oh, you were right lovie!'

_Galaxy Quest_ is a lot of fun - a guilty pleasure movie *and* Sigourney Weaver. Woot!

WrensHollow In reply to Tizrak [2006-06-10 00:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh dear gods I LOVE Galaxy Quest!! That was such a happy surprise!

As for monster movies, you know it's truly bad when you find yourself rooting for the monster / Big Bad because the main "hero / heroine" protagonist proves too stupid to live. An otherwise supposedly intelligent person doing completely brainless things that you *know* are just to boost the plot line. "Oh my car broke down outside of town in a rain storm, but rather than stay on the road and walk to the lights for help, I'm gonna wander deep into the woods, past all those trees with the big protruding roots, and camp out in this open mausoleum in the graveyard built on top of the ancient Indian burial ground. What could happen? Tee hee!" Nice one Darwin.

I know *exactly* what you mean because we have done that ... repeatedly. Sometimes we will watch a sequel of an especially bad one in hopes that some of the (undeserved) survivors of the first movie will die in the sequel.

'Oh, wow, we're going to genetically engineer a creature that, if it gets loose, will reproduce and kill off all live on earth ... and let's put it in a wire cage with a breaking strength it will eventually reach! No, no, don't put it in the furnace or better yet, not make it ... And, of course, we've got to protect it from the monster-hunters until it's strong enough to kill all of us.'

LOL It reminds me of the scene in Wayne's World 2 where they pass guys outside walking back and forth with crates of watermelons and chickens, and two guys whose sole job was to walk across the street carrying a large sheet of plate glass. Wayne looks at the camera and says, "gee ya gotta wonder if this is gonna pay off at some point..." Dun dun DUUUUUUUN!

*laughs* That does sound like fun! I never saw the Wayne's World movies ... were they generally worth the time? (quoting from Futurama: "You watched it - you can't unwatch it!")

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WrensHollow In reply to Tizrak [2006-06-12 21:45:44 +0000 UTC]

I loved them myself - especially the first one. The best parts of #2 (in my opinion) involve a Kung-Fu Theatre escapade with Cassandra's father, and the hilarious band roading explaining some of the extreme things he was willing to do to make sure Keith Moon had his brown M & Ms. The Roadie was fabulous.

But Wayne's World 1 is a classic. I guarantee you'll never hear Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody the same way again!

Frankly, I've never heard Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody the same way since reading _Good Omens_ ...

I'll keep an eye out for Wayne's World and watch it next opportunity - thanks for the tip!
