- Both were adopted into different codes of honor families (Kazuto was the heir of a kendo/samurai style household and meant to become a skilled kendo swordfighter and Artoria was born into a family that trained her into being a knight).
- They have foster siblings who were very supportive of them while often they sparred had opposite results (Leafa/Suguha who often won their sword fights in terms of samurai style battles against Kazuto and Sir Kay who often lost his clashes with Artoria).
- In their respective teenage years, they came across something which would change their lives (Kazuto entered Sword Art Online to become its top player and escape from the reality, which has dissatisfied him which he thought SAO was the perfect escape and a world which he loved, however him being confronted with the death game that is SAO, he took taking his survival over all else, eventually learning to change what he fought for from his self-survival to living for others. Artoria took up the challenge to become king through the Sword in the Stone and completed by pulling the sword out of the ground, for her sole purpose was specifically to make others happy during her kingship, already satisfied with the life she lived, took the happiness of her subjects over herself, something she did not realize would plague many lives).
- During their lives in this new life, they choose to have far from the ordinary careers with even their bodies being unable to age. They fought many battles alongside monsters, killers, other knights, etc.
- They secluded themselves in certain ways: Kazuto/Kirito, having the given title of The Black Swordsman, was seen as a Beater (a nickname for Beta Tester + Cheater) and someone who had no care for everyone else in the death game, which people grew to only seeking his aid for being a top player and having a small friend group, and while Kirito not caring may have been true at first, it later became further from the truth. Meanwhile Arthur/Artoria not only traded away her chances of a normal life, she also made it so her personality was never seen and her kingship one of fearlessness with her gender a secret with many mistakes made later people grew to hate her.
- They took on many similar adventures in the fantasy-like world, most of which were sacrificial, only for one day to learn they had been betrayed by people who they thought were their allies (Kirito betrayed by Heathcliff and Arthur by Mordred) which they died against their now enemies with the even more costly results of loved ones in revenge and their own sought out peace, Kirito and Arthur killed their once comrades in a double kill, at the result of both of the parties lives.
- In their revival, they were suddenly stuck in two wars where they regarded themselves as swordsmen while hiding their true identities despite that being the very reason they were in said wars and given a second chance, while still less than happy and almost depressed, only able to live because of their hope to save others (Kirito disregarded the Black Swordsman title in favor of bringing down a tyrannical ruler and a war on the other side of territory and Arthur now with the title Saber participated in the 4th and 5th Holy Grail Wars).
- Both are known for their timely switch of gender (Kazuto in Gun Gale Online and Artoria in Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night), wielding the Holy Sword Excalibur, and being among the strongest in their respective media.
- They had daughters whose identity was concealed for a time (Yui and Mordred), and are in love with comparable colored-haired sweethearts (Asuna and Shirou respectively).
