I like this as a contemporary still life experiment. In my mind, it certainly shows that you have considered the subject carefully.
This is shown through a number of things, firstly, composition -the use of negative space is important in highlighting the apple as the subject of the piece -and it is used well, showing an evolution from the classic still life bowl of fruit on a table, in front of a window.
Lighting is another aspect that contributes to this. You have used it well to show off both the colour and shape of the apple, as well as to accentuate the negative space in this shot. The fact that you have used side lighting is important in creating this, so it shows that you have thought about the technical details of creating this shot.
Focus -this is something I have a love/hate realtionship with in this image. I like how the focus is on the stem of the apple -it looks like it could be a stick stirring a cauldren to me (don't ask what goes on in my mind, even I don't know), however, it also kind of bothers me that detail is lost in the foreground -I know this is down to apature selection, and maybe that was what you were experimenting with in this shot. Personally I would have perferred a bit more depth to get the apple to roll out of the shot at the viewer.
In terms of intent, I do like the image, and as I said before, its an interesting take on contemporary still life. You said in your artists comments that you don't like green apples, but I'm not getting that feeling coming through in the image, and I'm not sure quite how to get around that.
Overall, I think it's a pretty good image, not least because green is my favourite colour and I'm a sucker for negative space e.deviantart.net/emoticons/let⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Lick) - "/>

They are so bitter. Blek.
Your lighting works well. The shades on the apple, the grays to black of the background... They might not be so good to eat, but they are pretty to look at.

Thanks. I was worry about the lighting, thinking it was going to look weird.

Well, it makes it look kind of painting-ish, what with the distinct facets of the apple... Is that the kind of weird you're talking about?
There's that the highlight on the apple and background gradient create competing centers... and come to think of it, the stem, in focus, creates a third. But that's more compositional, I guess.

I think the lighting on the apple makes it look a bit overexposed. Maybe it's just me over analyzing it.
Thanks for your comment though.
