Description
Midsummer is one of the formerly Pagan feast days that Christianity did a particularly poor job of converting in this region. Other than changing the name to transfer the focus to the nativity of John the Baptist (thus the Slavic name, "Ivan Kupala"), it did little to stop the traditional rituals of jumping over bonfires, floating illuminated flower wreaths, looking for fern flower, fortunetelling and copulating under the starry sky. Furthermore, even the name Kupala, meaning "someone who bathes", isn't used for John the Baptist other than in the name of this feast - it is in fact the name of a traditional, if a bit obscure, Slavic goddess of fertility and sexuality ¯\_(シ)_/¯
