Saé & her twin sister Chihiro ran away from their home. They had to serve at the house of the Aomori Clan & weren't allowed to do anything else. They didn't know where they come from, who their parents are & why they're actually servants of the Clan.
One day Chihiro eavesdropped the Leader of the Aomori Clan talking to a man with nice white hair, just like Chihiro & Saés hair. The man talked about that all the rules in this Clan are crazy, stealing the girls of the Hijikata Clan which was the mans Clan, & that he wants his daughters back, that he want Saé & Chihiro Hijikata back. Chihiro was shocked, she saw her father for the first time & he didn't hate her & her sister! They both always thought that their parents didn't want them, but know she knew, that this wasn't the truth. Their parents were forced to give them away which made she so happy. She ran away, searching for Saé & when she finally found her she screamed: 'Saé!!! Our Dad, he is here & he wants us back!!!' Saé couldn't believe her but followed her sister to the place she saw their father. When they arrived, the only thing they saw was red. Their father laid on the floor, surrounded by his own blood. His dead eyes starred at his daughters while the Leader of the Aomori Clan stand next to him, in his hand a Katana covered with blood.
Saé & Chihiro looked at their dead father. Chihro started to cry. Saé took the hand of her sister & started to run. She couldn't take all this anymore, within a second she decided to run away with Chihiro. She stole two cristalls which belonged to the Aomoris & where used as a symbol of togetherness & gave one two her sister as a symbol that they will belong together forever.

After running away, both were desperate. They didn't know how to fight or how to survive in the forest. Saé wondered if they shoudln't try to go back, but when she tought of their father she knew, that they could never go back.
Hungry & scared she starred at the cristall she stole, thinking about how they could kill an animal without any weapons, when suddenly the cristall started to shine. Saé could feel the 'heart' of this cristall which wanted to help her & 'thaught' her, how to create other cristalls out of it.
When Chihiro came back from searching some berries, Saé showed her the cristalls she made & laughed; 'Chihiro, Look what I can!'
