There is a considerable mystery about their origins.
Some believe they are remnants of the earliest population of the Balkans and Europe.
Historically centered around the Pindus mountains they live now in Greece, Bulgaria and have
a lesser presence in southern Albania and Macedonia.
Their language is built on an archaic Greek dialect with many Slavic and other loanwords.
In Greece, most of the Sarakatsani identify themselves with Greeks.
In Bulgaria, they retain their distinctive identity and number 45.100.
