Terengganu emerged as an independent sultanate in 1724.
In the 19th century it became a vassal state of Siam until 1909, when the
power was transferred to the British and Terengganu became an unfederated Malay State.
Occupied by Siam in WWII, it joined the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and, subsequently, Malaysia in 1963.
Located on the coast of the South China Sea.
