Vorarlberg

It is a western most federal state (land) of Austria.
It borders three countries : Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Wurtemberg via Lake Constance), Switzerland (Graubunden and St.Gallen) and Liechtenstein.
The only Austrian federal state that shares the border with Vorarlberg is Tyrol to the east.

Vorarlberg is also distinct in that it is the only province of Austria that does not speak an Austro-Bavarian, but rather an Alemannic dialect, it therefore culturally has much
more in common with its Alemannic - speaking neighbours Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Swabia then with Bavaria and the rest of Austria.

Following WW I there was a desire by many in Vorarlberg to join Switzerland. In the referendum on May 11, 1919, over 80% supported the proposal for the state to join the Swiss Confederation.
However this was prevented by the opposition of Austrian government, the Allies, Swiss liberals, the Swiss Italians and the Swiss French.
