"You'll be here when I come back?" He whispered into her ear as the ship let out a bellowing sound of finality.
"Always," She murmured, but turned her face away. Her voice shook slightly, but she hoped he wouldn't hear it. Wouldn't know the lie behind it. Because he had to get on that ship, the one that would take him so far away from the coming carnage. So far from her.
"I love you," she said, almost too quietly for him to hear. He nodded, pulling her against his chest.
"Wait for me. I'll be back," he told her, tipping her face up to look at him. "I will," he promised.
"I'll be here," she muttered, and in a way, she would. In pieces.
The ship let out another honk and the captian shouted out for 'all aboard.'
"I love you," he said sofly, kissing her passionately before racing off to board the ship. She turned to the man stalking towards her, the stranger who was to become her killer.
"You know I'm not going down without a fight, right?" She asked. He nodded.
"They never do," he agreed.
"For him," she growled. He nodded again. She handed him a letter, a ribbon wrapped around it and sealed with wax. The shape of lips was pressed into the seal.
"For him," the stranger echoed. She nodded rigidly.
"Let's do this."
