There's a great piece by Thad Jones, called "Paul" (tribute to Paul Desmond) -- Violin/ Cello duet with Alto sax obligato.  We did it with Oboe/Bassoon.  And there's also a jazz version of Daphnis & Chloe (from Ravel's "Daphnis & Chloe suite No. 2".  I played the Alto sax part (which was the main violin melody) on Bassoon, while others played other woodwinds on their sax parts.  Came off very well.

Are you using a clip-on mic or a bocal transducer?  Any kind of regular microphone will pick up the bleed-thru from the bones & trumpets.  And under NO circumstances should you use a bell microphone for bassoon in jazz band: this puts the mic within the laser-sites of the trumpets!  Plus, all a bell microphone picks up are the highs (8kHz & above) and the harmonics of the lows (which is how you can hear low music with ear-buds) -- recordings done this way have the tone quality of AM music...

Bocal transducers are the way to go, except it involves soldering the microphone mount to the bocal; so, just use your 2nd or 3rd best bocal for this.  The best is the "Little Jake" microphone pickup.  You can see who uses them at tjbassoon.com/2013/06/20/whos-… .  They work REALLY well!

Tenor/Bassoon is a very common double, since bassoon is a melody instrument.  I played Bari/Bassoon/Bass Clarinet/Flute -- traveling was a B*TCH!!

Lead Alto "leads" the sax section, but Lead Tenor gets ALL the solos (Lew Tabakin, Tom Scott, etc.). Bari supports from below, usually at the octave, most times just as loud as Lead Alto!

I KNOW you're going to have a GREAT time!!!  Enjoy!

JAZZ BASSOON??? My band director makes me play my tenor sax in jazz! I have alto sax and bassoon withdrawl. I tried talking him into playing a piece where all the double instrumentalists could play their concert horns! He said no...

Oooh I'm personally not a fan of tenor. You should show him some of the jazz bassoon out there on youtube and such. It's really neat and maybe he will change his mind
