street shot taken in amsterdam centre. I thought the bike, shop window, grafitti and cobbled stone pathways summed up amsterdam perfectly in one shot.huge thanx to leocbrito and estudio for makein this a Daily Deviation!!

Show Me Photographs
This one has really stumped me. I've spent hours - literally - looking at this image, trying to work out what and how to say what I'm going to. The problem is that this is a Daily Deviation - the highest accolade, really, that we have on DA.
So I decided that 1) I was asked for an honest opinion, and 2) I'd give it. I won't speculate on the motives, why this is a DD, why it is as popular as it is, or why it won the Critics Pick. What follows is my opinion which I have been asked for. Apart from y2jabba, I'm not interested in differing opinions.
Let me start by saying that the picture does not say 'Amsterdam' to me - it positively screams urban, but an inner city in Western / Northern Europe. I can see this image being taken in Paris, Berlin, London, and many other places. That's cool - the photograph benefits, for me, from a blurry sense of origin.
The B&W treatment and contrast are perfect for this shot, enhancing the gritty feel and conveying the grime of inner city life.
For me, the composure is confusing. It doesn't provide a focal point - my eyes sit most comfortably on the two faces just off centre and are unwilling to move - traversing the entire image is quite difficult. It is almost posed, which is the antithesis of true street photography. I doubt that it was posed, but it has that feel. A slightly wider view might have allowed you to define the main subject a little better, and also provided more depth. The lack of fore- or background contribute to the slightly stagnant feel. Oddly, this might actually be a key part of the overall feel.
The focus is also part of this. For me, the bicycle should be in sharp focus, which would go some way to increasing it's importance in the overall composure. I do love the way the front wheel protrudes outside the frame, but for me this key subject fades a little more than would be ideal.
Overall this is an excellent shot, but I don't feel that it has that certain something. I can't really suggest definite areas for improvement, because there are none, but I have tried to point out areas where I think the image could be given more punch.

hehe yeah well spotted, i hate borders for the sake of them so i like to make it a part of the image, tried to encorporate a bit of the path into the border too.
