Description My first complete painting of the year! Okie I stuck this in the anime gallery since Aquina is obviously in the same style I draw in. However... this is NOT a normal watercolor painting, despite all its appearances and style. It's a miniature. (Gwah! I feel so silly! I wish you all had studied miniature and then you'd understand why I emphasize on the difference! >.< )

Medium: Gouache on wasli
Time: 5 days? (emergency speed of making a mini! lack of time! )

Okie... so this is the first part of four paintings I'm doing for this exibition (me no think me can reach deadline... *gets stomach ache*), based on the creation of the Spirits. Soooo... anyways... before the actual thingy in the painting - the background story! (Warning! Boring story ahead! Skip if falling asleep. XD )

In a time long ago, when magic was all powerful in the world being the main source of energy, there stood a city, Seul Noftra, where Harmonie is today. There all the greatest mages and sorcerers gathered, lived, and exchanged ideas. But the mightiest amongst them all were 32, who knew the very knowledge of the heavens, and with this knowledge were made immortal. But 6 from the 32 who were skilled in the elements were not yet content, for they deemed the world could have more than what it already had. And so they set about to make men, people and creatures. Ofcourse, no man, no matter how mighty, can ever make what God can, and the people they created were not perfect. Composed of whichever element their creator had innate skills in, these people were flawed in appearance, with pointy ears and marks upon their bodies, and their temprament was volatile, the magic within them could burst out in destructive results if not taken care of. Still, these people were gentle at heart and loved those who had created them greatly; with time humans came to call these people as Spirits, and with later bondings and marriages within the humans, came today those that live in Sol Estor.

The 32 lived on, even as the land changed (and the great magic was lost, machinery taking its place), and with time came to be known as the 32 gods.

(End of long boring blab. Sorry!)

Sooooo.... in this painting - Aquina, the goddess of water, danced amongst the waters of the world, and the waters danced with her and from that created new sea life, springs that healed and restored strength to travelers and ofcourse the water elemental spirits.

(random side note: Aquina's spell circle says 'the hand that creates shall be the one to take'. Not that anyone cares... *cough* )

As much as I dislike anime/manga etc, I'm always blown away by your miniatures because I've never seen anyone doing anything ORIGINAL with the genre. The whole "neo-miniature movement" seems like such a sham of superimposed imagery/styles that looks like a mishmash of East meets West as opposed to a bonafide evolution of the miniature... and it looks like practically everyone is doing it. You're is so free of pretensions and looks so natural (as opposed to the forced style I've seen in other people's miniatures). And that's something I truely respect.

Woo... thank you! It's always rare to recieve such a detailed (and such a nice) comment! Especially from someone who doesn't even like anime!!

I guess deep down, in a way, I am one of those traditionalists. I love tiny details, I love stories and most of all, I love mangas. Since the persian style does have chinese influences, it seemed the perfect reason to combine the two and come up with something. Though, really, it wasn't in any attempt to be 'different'. I just wanted to tell my stories. Thank you very much for liking this!

Np what exactly is miniature painting? just painting really small?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to ashleyzadra [2006-08-06 12:01:27 +0000 UTC]

Weeelll.... the painting is small but that's not the only thing about it. They're those paintings you find in those old illuminated manuscripts made for kings or bibles. The painting style is actually totally different. They're usually made in gouache - with one flat layer of color at the bottom and then the rendering/shading done by painting dot, dot like with a totally dry brush, very slowly building up the darks. Basically, its just a painful way of torturing yourself and making yourself aware that you're totally insane. XD (I'm sure that's not the best of descriptions!)

On the other hand, these paintings are small. This one was 10 cm x 14 cm.

...omg I just checked and noticed that I have neither commented on nor faved any of your creation-pieces, although they're my favourites in your gallery!! I love elemental-ness-stuff, I love ideas about gods who make things and I adore your ideas and details!!! It feels like (better: since I first discovered these in your gallery months ago, it has felt like) I met someone who draws exactly the kind of pictures that I have always been wanting to be able to draw for the longest time of my life. XD My focus might have changed a little recently, but my head used to be full with similar ideas to yours! Only I was never able to realize them this beautifully. I wanna know all about your story and characters ~~~ @____@ AAAAH
In this one, I especially like the spell circle and the ornametal stuff in the waves. It's sooo beautiful!

random questions: miniature? does that mean you did this on a tiny canvas? -what kind of exhibition was that? did you display the whole creation-series? *_*

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to azmin [2006-07-05 11:29:03 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh... if it helps, I felt the same way when I saw your strategists piccy. I've always wanted to make fanart but never really ever had the brain for it (and I've never ever captured the people right enough!) But I'm so, so glad you like it that much! Or if it even resembles one little bit of whatever you might imagine in your mind! XD

Sadly though, Aquina is one of my least thought of characters from amongst the gods. She's actually one of the most prideful of the lot, believer of the 'world for the elite' type theory and just an over all pain. Later in the ages one of her people (the King of Toรฎle) got a crazy idea that she was destined to be his wife and caused a lot of bloodshed and stuff.

And ah, what is a miniature?! (Prepare for booooring answer!) It's actually another technique of painting used to illustrate the manuscripts of old and is, as the name suggests, incredibly small. This painting was actually 10 cm x 12 cm. They are made using either gouche or watercolor, and the paper is handmade.

Em... it was an exhibition of all the biggie artists of Pakistan, displaying their works in India. God only knows why I was asked! @_@ And... em... yep I displayed all the creation series (if you can count 4 gods out of 32 as all!! )

azmin In reply to Yakra [2006-07-05 11:54:06 +0000 UTC]

It helps!! *___* Hearing that from feels great, even if it was just flattery! And I think I put it the wrong way: my ideas were never as elaborate as yours, the never came even close to the brilliance of your stuff. XD I just used to have ideas for elemental gods, too! which is why I'm still extremely attracted to element-related things today! At some point, 3,4 years ago, for some reason I abolished all elemental-ness and now they're all more or less 'normal' warlords and kings. XD Still with the character traits I thought up for the elemental gods, though.

Woo, that part with the obsessed king sounds interesting! ...YOu don't plan on publishing your story in the near future, do you...........? I more and more feel like I'd love it to bits!

Ahahah, you're genius, that's why they selected you. *__* Thanks for the explanation on miniatures! So, are you studying arts or something?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to azmin [2006-07-06 13:24:26 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually really curious about these warlords and kings of yours. How come I've never seen them? Somehow I always saw your fanart. (Ands I mean it, about your fanart! I've really rarely seen that good Suiko fanart!)

Anyways, I'd love to see these original charries of yours! ^.^

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

azmin In reply to Yakra [2006-07-06 18:37:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't usually show my original stuff to people... actually, I never show anyone, the thought kinda scares me - don't ask me why. XD But right now, I feel like I want to show them to you! <3<3 I just need a bit more time, because right now, I'm in my end of term tests and have no time for drawing at all... but as soon as I have, I'll sketch them out for you! Because all pictures they're in are pretty old, I haven't drawn any of them recently. ;_;

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to azmin [2006-07-07 11:18:15 +0000 UTC]

I actually know how you feel. I actually HATE showing my works to strangers and then having to give explainations. I feel like a fool. -.-

Somehow though, I've kind of gotten comfortable showing my work here since: 1. I don't need to talk! XD 2. There are others who have their own charries too! I'm not alone! And 3. No one can throw a rotten tomato at me! XDD

But in anycase, I'd love to see your characters, whenever you get comfortable enough in showing them. Seriously, your work is absolutely amazing (I used to be going squee at your art at any random suikosource feature even before I knew you were... you XD), and I want to actually know about these people of yours! (And in that while, I'll try to finish my Veniti-Tir-Ignir piccies!)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

azmin In reply to Yakra [2006-07-07 21:45:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes please give me more pictures. ^____^ and stop the flattering, even if it makes me happy to hear it. XD

I just found some scans of my older pictures and decided to upload them as a 'preview' for you. They're from the times when they were still gods, full of confidence and with less problems! XD These people are, from left to right, Cyan (water and ice), Adoni, (moon), and Sil (wind)! And this is Azora (earth), Arion (sun) and Karon (fire). Aren't they cute? ^^

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to azmin [2006-07-08 09:33:10 +0000 UTC]

It's not flattery! I mean it! And meh god... you're ashamed of these?!

I love Sil! ^_^ (Biiig surprise! XD) Besides the fact that he is a wind god (for some reason I always end up liking charries with wind affinities) he also really cute! XD Love the details in his armor too!

I think I like the first group more - Cyan, Adoni and Sil. Maybe its the dramatic lighting on them? Adoni's reminding me of meh own Luna actually for some reason. XD Maybe it's just the color of her clothes and hair?

I want to know more about these guys, especially Sil! What was his story and what problems did he end up facing later? Hey... I just thought of something. Did these gods of yours ever age or did they always stay the same? And what happened to them in the end?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

azmin In reply to Yakra [2006-07-08 22:19:57 +0000 UTC]

I think around the time I drew the picture, he was my favourite, too... probably because he was the youngest of them. XD Now, I love them all equally. I'm really curious to see your Luna now! If you have a sketch of her somewhere, I'd love to see it! It's a rare chance to compare moon goddess designs. ^___^ I think Adoni is one of the first characters I ever drew, and I always used to be very proud of the outcome. She looks a bit different today, though.

I'll write about Sil later. ^^ I'm really glad you like him!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to azmin [2006-07-09 11:59:48 +0000 UTC]

Ok that's extra surprising, hearing Sil's the youngest, since my Veniti is one of the younger (if he can be even called younger) gods. ^_^ He he.... maybe I'm just seeing weird similarities in nothing!

Luna's actually there in one of the piccies in my scraps. [link] I doubt she's very noticable, she's just a tiny blurry creature on the furthest left circle. It's Adoni's colors that remind me so much of her actually.

You really have to make more piccies of your original charries once you get the time! It would be so intresting to hear more about them.

I already ed this but now I actually get to comment here xD

the deep indigo-ish shades of blue here look so soothing! the gradients and the transparency support the watery feel very well and look just awesome together! I don't think I've seen a cleaner artwork from you so far, so it might be rushed but sure doesn't look like it! wah, I can't stop staring, all that swirly blueish transparent goodness (with a moon! ) is just exactly my taste.
I just wonder how on earth you did that. Especially on the right-side pic of the painting the gust/foam/stuff and the substance the water spirit is evolving from look ... just great. o_O

Hey, you know that -I- care about the spells and what they mean and all, since I can't read them!
Actually all of the story behind your pics is always interesting I think it adds a lot to the picture and it's nice to see how much thought you put into your stuff! Also, it makes me want to read your stories as novel/comic/whatever more and more! You have to make that public someday! xD

For example... I wonder, did everyone of the 32 gods have their own element or did some have the same? If every one of them had their own element that would be LOTS. ยฐ_ยฐ and would make me quite curious what elements they are. I guess the 6 elementals who created their spirits then were water, fire, earth, wind, light and dark, judging from your older pic with all the summoners and spirits. Oh wait that wouldn't include the music element @.@

Also... aren't their sometimes animosities between the normal humans of Sol Estor and the elemental Spirits? Just a thought I found interesting.

Seul Noftra? For some reason I read it as "nostra" first... maybe because I read that word nostra several times, and I might have read it with old-german s... which looks like an f! confusing, I know, no need to think further about it xD

soo... two more paintings to go then, right? I'm looking forward to them!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2006-02-16 09:31:14 +0000 UTC]

I think the clean, clean look just came along with being a miniature... I really like gouche, you can do so much in it! XD

Anyways, not all of the 32 had elements. Only those six, and only they actually created the spirits (or actually just 5 of them, since Veniti (wind) was against all this). The seventh one of them was Quintessence or music, and after she was born she did follow in her parents example and make spirits. (I just didn't put her in the catagory of the six since she is a non-element or an ultimate element, depending on whoever's point of view. There is going to be a painting on her though! XD) So basically... these 7 elements are the main creators and so all spirits are elementals.

The other gods were skilled in other aspects of life. Like Ulkar, the high god was the god of judgement and Medera his queen is the goddess of punishment. These guys never really made any 'spirits' or such, just laid down the laws and aided their creations. But then there were some others like Kelari, the goddess of destruction, who did go out of her way once or twice and created some spirits.

XD

And nope, no animosities between the humans and spirits of Sol Estor. The spirits were always looked upon as the lowest form of creation, often reduced to being declared a 'spell'. But there were some who actually loved them and those were the ones who actually followed them to Sol Estor. Sol Estor has always been basically a place of peace and rejection of all the troubles of the world, and later on in the time of machinery, these people were considered to be the greatest of sages.

(God I yip a lot! Hope I didn't bore you to death! )

(Aaaaand... Nostra? Em... I always kind of just make up words at random without any meaning. But this time Noftra came from Ignis' N - which is I think 'find'. (remember the spell circle around Lul in that marker pic? ) What does Nostra mean? *curious!* )

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ScatterbrainFox In reply to Yakra [2006-02-16 09:48:14 +0000 UTC]

ah, I understand. I think. xD

When Veniti was against the idea of creating spirits... didn't she create wind spirits?

okay, Sol Estor is actually a city of the spirits @.@ should've taken that in mind xD;

Nostra isn't a german word as far as I know, I just think I remember having seen it written in that old german script somewhere... isn't nostra french actually for the female "ours" or something? o_O that's what I think.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2006-02-16 10:31:55 +0000 UTC]

Okie, so actually I never found nostra in french... (probably because I was doodling in class and not paying attention... XD). *shall look!* Anyways, Veniti is a he. Nope he never made any spirits. The only thing he did make were initial drafts of airships. XD And he designed Io (the only created goddess, made by Ignir).

Sooooo... where did wind elementals come from? No idea? Offsprings of water and fire?

(On a side note... Lul always prays to Veniti, her chosen god. XD Much to the annoyance of Luc)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ScatterbrainFox In reply to Yakra [2006-02-16 10:44:52 +0000 UTC]

wait, in french it's notre. Nostra is probably the latin equivalent @_@

Oh, I'm such a retard, I can never get anything right, for some reason I assumed Veniti was female
hmmm, so you haven't figured out where the wind elements originate from yourself? Maybe someone who's connected to Veniti created them, if there is such a person. Or he created them on accident or they created themselves? Offspring of water and fire? seems interesting as well o,o I could go on about this forever XD

Lul is a fire element and has chosen the wind god as her deity? And Luc is annoyed by that as a Wind summoner?

oh, there's a question that just popped up again in my head... you mentioned that the spirits have pointed ears and I've seen that too - but on most on your pictures the characters are so small I can't really see their ears clearly. I remember when I drew Lul I made her ears kinda... fluffy with some kinda fur on it. Don't ask me how I got that idea and I'm pretty sure that they're not supposed to be like that when I think about it now... but their ears are NOT furry, right? Just wanted to sort that out xD;

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2006-02-16 11:16:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, Veniti does sound girlie! XD

Nah the ears arent really furry. Only the bottom parts of some elementals. XD So you didn't really go wrong. Lul's ears aren't though.

Luc is a singer priest of Harmonie - meaning he worships the One God. Soooo... he really isn't delighted when his own summoner refuses to understand that this guy was only a normal man. ^.^

Lul worships Veniti for the airships and the machinery. He's also considered like a guardian/patron of the guild of alchemists and mechanics. XD Basically that's the only reason she looks up to him. (Plus she knows it annoys Luc! )

Wind elementals are a mystery of nature! (Or as the believers say... God brought them into the world to go 'bleh!' at the 'gods'. XD)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ScatterbrainFox In reply to Yakra [2006-02-17 11:55:23 +0000 UTC]

...the bottom parts of some elementals are furry, what? now I'm pretty sure I got something wrong!
and now I wonder what singer priest means o.O (I'll probably never stop asking, sorry XD; )

aaaah, I remember Lul with the Airship thingie on that comic page of yours! ... but now that I look at that page again Lul's ear looks like that of a fox to me once again @_@ I'm probably seeing something wrong... it's like with those optical illusions, once you think you see something, your mind won't accept anything else!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Yakra In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2006-02-18 08:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh heh... I always end up saying a silly line like this! *gets weird visions * I meant the bottom parts of some elementals' ears are furry. Nope, no furry ears for Lul. Only random hairs which stick have been tucked behind her ears and refuse to stay tucked. XD;

Singer priests are the special preists of Harmonie who are devoted to the One God. What makes them different from the warrior priests or the normal clergy though is the fact that when they sing they can either prophesize about the future or show visions of the past, or they can use their song to heal, defend, blah, blah.

I ask a lot of questions too!

(on a side note... when I just read the Shannara books right now, I was a bit blah-ed out when I read about the wishsong. It made me feel like I had cheated the song idea. I guess no idea is actually original?)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ScatterbrainFox In reply to Yakra [2006-02-20 08:26:36 +0000 UTC]

wow, I had no idea Luc could sing xD or rather, that thought has never crossed my mind (maybe then I would've thought he would be one of those people with the music element).

Nope, no idea is original. There's always at least ONE person who has thought of the same thing it seems.
That's why you shouldn't fuss about finding it somewhere else too. I mean it can get a bit disappointing to see your ideas aren't actually as original as you thought, but it also counts how you adapt them to everything and so on. I still like the idea and think it's original (not in a way that you're the only one who thought of it... but hey, you'd be the only person I know who would!).
Also, the healing with song might be a more common idea, but the prophesizing/visions thing? Never heard of it before, but I like it

Y'know, you're like my favorite miniaturist ever! Where should I start? Its full of movement and magic, I absolutely love how you've painted the water and the sky. Great composition ofcourse! Reminds me of a song, Deep blue (by Angra). And I didn't really have to read the write up(which is well conceived as well) to tell what the pic is about(the title helped too I guess ). Wonderfully woven Myth . Can't wait to see the rest!

I regret not having started stalking you in first year

Thanks! ^.^ hey that makes me feel veeeeeery good! Especially since its coming from someone who's worked on miniatures herself! ^.^ *runs around happily. wheeeeee! XD*

(Mweh... ofcourse I have never heard the song. *feels like hearing it?* I seem to have the most limited tastes in music (as you've figured by now...))

You know... I'm very afraid this might be classified as a non-miniature..

And I regret not having grabbed you in your first year! There was no one else back then who was intrested in animes!

You're most welcome ^___^. Well apart from the skill... you *are* like teh first and only miniaturist of the sort around (as far as I know XD). *Recalls second year miniature block* Well, I guess they could be called miniatures.

Umm...actually, I have an obscure taste in music. You should be able to find it on some p2p software. Or I could send it via msn or something (must...force...people..to...listen... xD).

I was very dissapointed to discover there were no other otaku's and the sort in my first year. Since I thought NCA would have weird people like myself. At the end of first year someone told me an otaku existed in second year finearts... but I was too much of a shy 'tard to find out more... Okay I'm sounding incredibly creepy now

I don't think it should be classified as a non-miniature 0_0
