Description Third painting of this series! I'm actually managing to get them done! (Now if only I can finish them all by the deadline... )

Medium: Watercolours, gouache, pencil, gold and silver leaf
Time: 5 days?

Hrm... while I felt the other ones were far too busy and cluttered, this one is seeming far, far too empty! Aside from the fact that it feels like the actual theme/story is just not getting conveyed by merely looking at it? I mean... it just looks like a little kid on a throne, ne?

Anyways, obligatory story - Emperor Friedrinchek Egome von Blahblargh XIII, the great child prodigy, had just received some nice new officials and soldiers to play around with from his fairy 'mother'. And what better soldiers then these could there be?! They danced around for him, they waved swords at his whim, and why... they sparkled! It was truly a minor thing that 'mother' wanted to remove the heads of the ugly old soldiers of his father's. After all, one could always give them pretty sparkley new faces after that, no?

(Alternate title: 'Mommy doesn't like your faces so off with thine heads!' )

"Emperor Friedrinchek Egome von Blahblargh XIII"

Lol......... is this name inspired by Suikoden Narcissists? XD and Blahblargh really? Lol TT

Wow this is so pretty... the background is gorgeous! Such a mystical starry night sky.. ^^ and the throne is great! The little emperor sure looks like he's ready to be great too! Love how everything is so oversized on him..XD;

The fairy mother is pretty too ^^~ I like the looks of the royal guards! << The guys with long blue hair... man they look so awesome... Inspired by Ferid? >>

Nice job!

I think what the kids mum is doing makes a lot of sense and that she's totally sane and rational in doing what she's doing

The kid is so cute, and his mom is so very pretty (pink hair *dies*) and I cannot quite put into words what I think about the new guards, with the lovely blue hair and beautiful wings )

I think compositionally, the cluttered and uncluttered area's balance each other out. The clutter really enhances the opulent feel, and the rich colors look delicious!

I don't think it is possible to convey the whole story in a single painting (unless it had panels). It's intriguing without the text even .

Yes she is! When one has fairy servants like so, who needs ugly mortals!

Anyways, thank you! ^____^ Heh heh... I got a lot of odd comments, between the fairy 'mom' and the kid. I have been told that apparently all the people I draw look androgynous, minus this particular lady! X'DDD By the way, whenever I see that bottle of pink paint, I always think of you. You'd do insane with it, I'm sure! XD

I'm still not happy with this actually (though I'm glad you find the composition ok! ). It sent me into such 'blargh!' fits that.... I kept avoiding looking at this and so am finally replying to you all... now. :'D

Androgynous? Eh? I think it's because most people have a very fixed opinion of what a man should look/behave like and what a woman should look/behave like. However this is your idea of what a man or woman of a certain race/place in your world would look like. Most people have tiny imaginations and have trouble understanding that.

Nobody mistake Fenrir for a woman if you chopped of his hair and gave him boring clothes. That's what a man should look like in their minds.

Otherwise, I've always felt that your charas have looks as distinctive as their personalities, Apart from the ones who are vain or meant to be androgynous .

Eep sorry for the ramble! This gender issue really gets me going XD

Hmm, yeah, there are those strange paintings that others seem to like a lot but the artist her/himself doesn't like at all :/ But you really don't have much of a reason to worry.

Heheh... piiiink paaaint! I might not even use it at all, I'd make it a decoration piece nad drool over it (look not touch!)

I get hyper over the gender issue too. But really, I'm getting the feeling the problem with my characters runs beyond the short hair, since Luc almost always gets called 'aw! what a sweet little girl!' and Lularum 'my! what an adorable little boy!'. X'DDD *fails at life* ...Perhaps the clothes...? :'D People do need to broaden their way of thinking!

The pink paint bottle is very delicious to look at too! Very yum! Very droolable! Its a bit sad I don't have enough pink in my paintings... hrmmmm....

Aye, but there are guys who're girly looking and short in real life too. One of me coworkers who's like that was even referred to as 'Asma' instead of 'Raza'

And women with short hair are immediately labeled as boyish anyway.

I thought those two were meant to look androgynous, and it fits the Alchemy thing! (And I like them like that)

Yakra In reply to merriya [2008-12-06 18:10:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah well.... true, they both were kind of meant to look androgynous, fitting their alchemy stone, but...! It kind of gets annoying when people are convinced that Lul is a guy and cannot possibly be a girl. :'D They do that to Aimon too, actually. Now Fenrir, on the other hand, is most definitely a very pretty girl! XD

...Its actually incredibly amusing in the end.

Poor guy you worked with! He must be a very pretty guy!

merriya In reply to Yakra [2008-12-07 08:04:20 +0000 UTC]

Pretty isn't the right word, 'kawaii' was more like it!

Eh, Aimon never struck me as androgynous? tomboyish, yes, but she still looked female, meh, poor Fenrir XD. He doesn't even look anywhere as girly as most bishi's do

whaa! poor kid, he has such a cruel mother! XD;

It's kind of true, though, I didn't get the story by just looking at the pic, but I do get that the kneeling guy is begging for mercy (...right?)! After reading your story everything really fits, though! Can't really portray such complicated story in just one painting, right?

Yakra In reply to arashi-yukawa [2008-12-06 12:55:59 +0000 UTC]

Kids should listen to their moms, no matter what they say!

I wish... one could have paintings that would just speak out the story to the viewer or something! (inbuilt voice box? :'D *weird ideas*) But yeah, the guy is kneeling for mercy before his king. I'm glad atleast that much is apparent!

Thank you so much for the comment, by the way. I've been the worst laziest ass in replying! :'D

Finally replying!

These paintings were/are for one of my latest exhibitions? This particular set was about how quickly one runs to blame the Other, and how quickly one gets enchanted, fascinated, and beguiled by the other.

I love the wings and how they sort seem to float on top of everything .. very beautiful. I think I get where you're coming from on this piece looking empty, maybe you could have added some more little details around the throne, to focus the viewers attention on the center of the piece a little more.

Well, thats just my opinion, I love it anyways ! Very well done

Yakra In reply to TortuousThrenody [2008-12-06 15:06:44 +0000 UTC]

I actually did think about adding more details around the throne. Or rather, a very subtle pattern on the red carpet (perhaps, the pattern being a lighter shade of red itself, barely distinct) but time limitations forced me to give up and put this aside, lest I be left weeping later! X'D

Thank you so much for the comment and the advice as always! They're always incredibly helpful. ^____^

As usual, it is a very fine painting. The colors are bright, and the characters are dynamic, and your attention to detail never fails to impress.

Your alternative title is also hilarious.
