Description Er... How do immortals age, if they age at all? Does meh Veniti (white-robed book reader) look somewhat old and worn down, yet still recognizable?

Medium: Tea, watercolors and watercolor pencils on parchment

Anyways, the depressed wind god Veniti ( '...' ) and his apprentice Gaius ( 'Master... please don't fall in the gutter again..!' ) - an orphan boy (apprentices have to be orphans! ) who badgered the god so much that he HAD to teach him. But apprenticehood be not an easy thing, especially when the master forgets half the time that he even had an apprentice. And so... poor Gaius had to run around finding food and clothes (the previous apprentice's - a girl) for himself, while taking care of his master too, who used to forget that he was still alive.

[In case you wonder 'Who be this Gaius? About whom she babbles?', its the old alchemist in this pic --> [link] - the one playing with his daughter.]

Em... it was quite fun drawing this, trying to imagine what the Wind city and it's people would be like. Even though Veniti was their god, he wasn't loved much and people gossiped about him often on his face. Ofcourse, he never noticed. (Er... not until his head got chopped off that is... XD)

Criticism? [Gah... Veniti's walking funnily...]

[I'm starting to enjoy finishing these unfinished ignored sketches!]

ah how did I miss to comment on this!? I love this picture, it's so full of character - and your description to go along with it makes it all the better as always.

Oh poor Gaius xD It's always lovely to see characters in a different time than you're used to seeing them, especially when the characters are as old as Gaius normally looks, because you think you can get a very different view of them then... regardless how much they've changed over time.
In this case it's just interesting to see how he started out, having to take care not only of himself but also of his master! (and wearing girl's clothes, oh dear ! XD) his hunched and worried look is so full of personality, I think it's my favourite part of the picture.

And Veniti! Ah dear I always feel so much pity for him ;___; he looks worn, but not very old, but that's fine I think - I assume gods age too, but not so much in their body actually...decaying as maybe growing worn as you have put it and only their appearance as in body language etc. might tell it~ at least that's my interpretation xD

Ahhhh I've always wanted to paint with tea...no wait, with coffee, but somehow the color was so very pale, I think I must've done something wrong @_@ did you paint all of the background washes with the tea (which one did you use if I may ask?) or just the...splotches? XD

about the walks - I think they're very welldone but I would suggest to put the weight of the people more forwards - a bit as if they're falling, especially when they walk fast.

Veniti's fine I guess, his leg stretched out so much just makes it look like he has a powerful stride going on, when I assume you might have wanted him to have a more slow pace. Smaller steps with maybe one leg trailing behind would probably have brought this across better.

I agree with Denny, love the 2 gossip ladies...XD they are the first part of the background I noticed!!

and no worries, Veniti looks oldish allright! Nit TOO old but yeah XD Certainly looks so into the book he doesnt notice anythign else around... wont be surprised if he trips or falls XD

I liek Gaius..XD Such a huge book bag! But like his shirt most..Starry +___+

Ooh they heading for library? I see library sign in the bg! 8D great job as always ^__^ So lively~ Sorry I late though TT

Late comments be fine! ^__^ I'm such a lazy commenter so I can relate!

Veniti looks somewhat old atleast? I'm happy. One shall just assume that gods age slowly, if at all! (Since his brother looks just the same now as he did on his first day of er... godhood?) I'm glad Gaius is liked too! Thank you! ^_^

Heh heh... er... that's actually a random bookshop. 'Librairie' --> Bookshop X'D (old people be unoriginal and just call their stores by what they are?)

I find it very hard to believe that the old man and this young boy are the same person but anyway, I like how you made the two of them stand out, having everyone in the background kind of fade away with the details intact

All old people have to be young sometime! I had a hard time thinking what he would look like, if it helps...

The messy lazy results actually be liked though?! Thanks a lot!

Once again, your attention to detail is emaculate.

Painted with tea? How does one go about that?

Yakra In reply to k-sanzo [2007-07-20 10:49:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! ^_^

I basically dunked a tea bag into a cup of... er... not so warm water and waited till it had let out enough color. I guess meh life would have been much easier if I had used hot water - the tea would have let out color faster and I wouldn't have to wait so much... Anyways, with that colored water, I simply painted. Tada! Oh, near the end I wondered whether I would have gotten a nice pattern if I had used loose tea leaves, so that some would have stuck to meh paper and left more color as the pic dried, so I just scooped out lumps from the tea bag and threw them at the piccy. X'D

Nothing amazing happened. Pooh.

forgot to say a little critique, you don't mind, right? XP Veniti's right leg is longer than the left XD (the one on the front? it's his right leg, right?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yakra In reply to arashi-yukawa [2007-07-20 11:06:45 +0000 UTC]

No I don't mind at all! I could feel something was wrong with the leg/the way he's walking. I never realized that one of his legs is longer until you pointed it out! >_< I hope its not too obvious... Then I can just pass it off for the weird walking ways of a god!

*ish replying to both comments in one, since is veeeerrry lazy *

Actually, imagining the places are pretty easy. It is usually from the places the charries usually end up popping up. Or in the case of the gods and their cities - kind of based on their character.

Tea is very fun to use! XD Colored water!

Tea! That's a fun idea. Everything fits so well together- the colors, the action, the background. I must say I find the story details you put for this picture fascinating! Really makes it come alive.

Thank you! I wasn't sure that anyone would want to read meh blab, but I'm happy that you did and enjoyed it too! ^_^

Tea's pretty fun to use, ne? It's like a mild form of ink, except that it's cheap, and you don't cry much if you accidenly end up spilling it! X'D

This is really great! I'm suprised that you used tea, but that would explain the wonderful sienna color in the bg, right?

I love it!! You're so creative, it's wonderful!

I actually use tea a lot... usually in borders of meh gouache paintings. But I knew this girl who used to paint with milk tea! Now THAT was surprising!

(and there are these other roots and leaves that give out other colors... I wanna try using them too..!)

I've also heard of people using coffee as well..?

Yakra In reply to xFullMetalxX [2007-07-14 11:43:26 +0000 UTC]

Coffee gives out this reeeeeaaaallly nice brown! And then your painting smells very nice in the end too! XD (if you like the smell of coffee that is... ) Tea's more reddish, in comparison.

Ooh, wow I never thought of how it would make it smell! That would be nice..I should try that some time

Yay, it's Veniti again! This is really lovely! Loving the parchmentish, timeless feel! It's a treat for the eyes!

What I find really interesting is how the people of Windcity react to their God's presence... You've captured the gossipy nature of those ladies perfectly, I like the other characters too! The book stalls look... familiar

Gaius is so adorable, poor lil fella... Oh hey*looks at the Railway station piccie* It's him! Veniti's soft godly glow and indifference to his surroundings and gloom are beautifully portrayed as well.

About his walk, yeah I kinda see what you mean... Maybe because of the length of the stride, waist down his body seems to be engaged in a fast-ish walk, where is waist up he seems kinda relaxed and droopy.. maybe that's what's giving his gait a slightly eccentric feel... which sorts of suits him, methinks... strange godly behavior!

Overall, I think this is an awesome character study, the drawing and lines are so very beautiful! And the coloring too of course!

(I can't help leaving such looong comments on your paintings...)

*likes making depressed wimpy induviduals and so all sorts of Venitis keep getting made*

It all actually popped up because I wanted to make a young Gaius. XD *is getting Gaius obsessed at the moment?* He's probably the only ancient charrie I have who's childhood I've thought of. The others were just... born ancient! X'D

Mweh heh... I felt like drawing the crowds that went along with these familiar bookstalls, but after 6 or so people meh hand and pencil got bored and mutinied. But thank you! Meh grubby sketches be appriciated!

I think it's Veniti's rear foot/leg that's causing problems. He seems to be half sneaking, half marching. >_> So I just declared that a part of his godly eccentricities! XDDD (Easier than redrawing... )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

merriya In reply to Yakra [2007-07-13 11:50:52 +0000 UTC]

I was doubting the rear foot as well, but it's difficult to tell since I can't see the position of the leg... doesn't matter much though...

Born ancient! Nice! The stars on Gaius' garb reminds me of my PJ's (except they're dark blue and the stars on them glow in the dark 8D)

The (so called) 'grubby sketches' are appreciated immensly!

Yaay ~ more stuff from you~They soooo cute and cool and aww love the stars on Gaius` robe! XD
Veniti looks like an airhead.. but again must be cause he is god of the winds? He looks really interesting though ~ ^^ Like those 2 gossip ladies XD they are like "OH did you hear!?" *GASP* "no o.o!"
Lovely work full of inspiraion ~

Yakra In reply to Exarrdian [2007-07-11 11:55:48 +0000 UTC]

Without the stars the two looked like a pair of beggars! XDD

Centuries of sitting and moping around have turned Veniti into an airhead! (the winds may have helped too though! XD)

Oh my! You caught the gossipy ladies' conversation perfectly! Those were the exact words I was thinking (with some additions ).

Thank you incredibly for liking it so much and the fav!

Thank you! I was trying to get that ancient-type-effect, so I'm happy you find it so!

The tea... em... well, I just mostly worked in washes with it. But in some parts, I scooped out the tea leaves from the cup and just threw it on the painting and waited for it to dry. It didn't come out exactly as I had wanted it to be, but I'm happy!
