Yay for pink! Sorry for taking so long to write this. My computer's crashed twice while making a comment for this.
Your IDs have been nothing but amazing, but I'm so happy to see full-body characters from you. Then again, I always say just how much importance I put into faces. Oh, what the hey, I just like your art. All of it.
The colours work wonderfully, and they're basically the center of attention in this pic.. but I feel I wanna start with pose and expression, which really set the stage for your incredible colouring to work.
What a simply original pose! Very doggie-ish, I think. I dunno, it's the way the curve of the back and the curve of the tail work together. Heck, I think "curve" is the central theme in this picture. Notice Koinu's muzzle, it's also arched.
Speaking of muzzle, what a nice, playful, devilish "bad doggie no biscuit... awww how can I stay mad at you?" look you got him in. The hanging tongue, perked ears and sly look even has a very slight sexual undertone that really makes his playfulness look downright mischievous! XD
But the colours, oh the colours!! I'm amazed at how wonderful the pink looks! Wow! I'll never look down on pink ever again! And what a great way to match it. The pink goes excellent with red and white (red+whiteink). The relying more on white than red was a good idea. The pink is a very flashy colour, and is so bright you have to really compliment it with other bright colours, as a darker one would make one's eyes hurt with the contrast. But, too much bright and you end up with a dazzling pic that ALSO hurts the eyes. White brings the best of both worlds, as it's technically a "bright" colour, but it's also very gentle on the eyes, unlike if you used say a bright yellow or orange. The red in only minimal ammounts adds "flavour" like one would add a bit of salt or cinnammon. Not too much, just enough to spice things up.
Using blue was a daring thing to do, and I gotta congratulate you on it. Blue and pink, right off the bat, wouldn't seem like two colours to put together, but if you think about it a bit longer and you have a skill in mixing tones (like you most certainly do), you end up with a gorgeous contrasting that makes my jaw drop. Not only does it have the same non-dazzling gentleness of white and work like a contrasting colour, but it also adds a certain boyish sense to Koinu (blue for boys, pink for girls, as the cliche goes). Plus, denims and a longsleeved shirt are ALWAYS a great combo. Style!
Sooooo.. many many many congrats on a wonderful piece, Yama! You never cease to amaze me. ^-^
