Description (All of my jail stories can be found in the Number 979 folder  in my gallery)

I was assigned to cell #13. I arrived at my cell right at dinnertime. One of them cried out loud excitedly when they saw they were gonna have a new cellmate and another yelled "YOUKOSO!" (welcome!).

I had four cellmates:
-Emi, who is Russian, but judging from her Japanese it seems that she grew up here.
-Anri, of Korean descent, although is pretty much Japanese in her demeanor as well.
-Momo, Chinese, who moved to Japan when she was of high school age.
-An old Japanese lady whose name I never learned, but everyone called her "okaasan" which means "mother", so I did the same.

They immediately made a place for me at the dinner mat, handing me my bento and giving me tea. Emi yelled at the guard to get me some chopsticks.

At first I was wondering why the guards never bothered to teach me the facility's procedures, like how to prepare for meals, how to answer to roll call, how to hand items back to the guard, etc., and it turns out that it was expected that my cellmates would take me under their wing and teach me. Which they did.

How long were you in there for? Almost seems like a strange holiday hotel. English prisons aren't as nice. My mum has been in a few times

Just 3 days! Yeah, I think Japan must be one of the best places to go to jail (but Scandinavia might be the best!)

It was mostly pleasant! The not-so-good moments were just frustrations at best.

I think the best thing about this are the expressions on everyone's face. Showing who they are it feels like.

Ummmmm I don't want to sound like I am being mean to the Japanese police....but are they just super suspicious of all foreign people and no one here was really a criminal?

Oh, I've spoken to them, they've done stuff. I just happened to have been placed in a very mixed cell, but the cell next to mine had 4 Japanese and one foreigner and the one on the other side had 3 Japanese and 2 foreigners.

Oh my what an adventure!    At least your cellmates were hospitable.  Interesting how the culture permeates everything.

Yeah, I was kinda nervous regarding what kind of people would be my cellmates, but my fears melted away within seconds

Ah, you mean Keimusho no Naka? A few people have been mentioning that to me when I started doing these illustrations, yeah Too bad my experience isn't even a sliver of his.

So, what were they all in for? Or would it have been impolite to ask?

yapi In reply to Artificer-Urza [2016-01-17 19:00:27 +0000 UTC]

I don't think so, since they asked me outright what I was in for. I think everyone asks each other that question

....Okay, it is REALLY surprising me how pleasant prison apparently is in Japan...Or maybe it just shows how shitty American prisons are by comparison? Movies & TV LIE! XD

Granted, I'm guessing these cells were for non-dangerous prisoners who didn't commit truly serious crimes, cuz your cell mates sound like the nicest people imaginable.

yapi In reply to KaijuDuke [2016-01-10 14:10:16 +0000 UTC]

Well, it also has to do with Japanese culture. Politeness prevails, even in jail
