Description In Northern English Folklore the Barghest or Barguest is mythical monstrous black dog with fiery eyes, large teeth and claws.Β The peculiarity of the creature is to persecute those who in life have committed crimes of various and serious entities,
such as the Greek Erinyesand and often it serves as an omen of death. It may also become invisible and walk about with the sound of rattling chains. The Barghest may also foretell the death of an individual by laying across the threshold of his or her house, and like the vampire the Barghest is unable to cross rivers. The writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have based on this Yorkshire creature for the writing of the "Hound of
Baskerville".
