Description

Antique RPPC (real photo post card) of a historic church

in Honolulu Oahu, Hawaii in its pre-statehood days.

Circa 1930s

A fine example of Japanese-Western eclectic architecture, The Makiki Christian Church is a five-story redwood building rendered in the style of an early Edo period castle of Japan. Its main tower rises ninety feet above street level.

It was built in 1931, and is the only Christian church in the United States designed to look like a 16th-century Japanese castle.

You can read more on the history of the inspiration and design of The "Makiki Castle" here :

It was the inspiration of the Reverend Okumura, and designed by Hego Fuchino.

That's so awesome!......and confusing...
Before reading the title I actually tried to see if I knew this castle and it reminded me of Himeji Castle; and then it turns out to be a church?!
Mind you, we have also an 'oddity' like that in the Netherlands.
In the village Oudenbosch in the Dutch province Noord-Brabant stands a smaller version of St. Peter's Basilica with the facade of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, constructed from 1865 to 1892, called  the Basilica of the H.H. Agatha and Barbara
That classical Italian is so different from the common style of our churches that it really feels out of place in our Dutch landscape. Apparently it was the dreamproject of the very ambitious Pastor Willem Hellemons (they called him "de Bouwpastoor" = the constructing Pastor").
