HUNTINGTON HOTEL (Now The Langham Huntington)
Pasadena, California
Sprawling hotel with the snow-topped San Gabriel Mountains as a backdrop. The hotel is renowned for its ornate architecture, lavish ballrooms and The Picture Bridge, a wooden bridge over a ravine on the hotel property that is decorated with a series of oil paintings of California landscapes.
This hotel originally opened in 1907 as the Hotel Wentworth, but was never completely finished and fell into disrepair, according to a history posted on the Langham’s website. Railroad mogul Henry Huntington purchased the hotel in 1911 and renovated it with the help of well-known Los Angeles architect Myron Hunt. He reopened it as the Huntington Hotel in 1914. The hotel began as a winter resort, attracting many visitors in the 1920s. The so-called “golden years” of the hotel saw visits from many businessmen, writers, entertainers and political leaders, many from the Midwest and East Coast looking to enjoy the California sunshine.
Stephen Royce, a longtime general manager who later bought the hotel, opened it year-round in 1926 based on high demand, at the same time building California’s first-ever Olympic-sized swimming pool on the property.
In 1954, Royce sold the hotel to the Sheraton Corporation, but in 1985 the hotel was forced to close for two years of renovations after it failed to meet earthquake safety standards.
In 1991 the hotel reopened, earthquake safe and under the new ownership of The Ritz-Carlton. The Langham Hospitality Group purchased the hotel in 2008.
