Ooofff I suggest you to look for a tutorial, It's a long process. I had to teach with a friend mear me telling me all the steps. Better if you can find a tutorial on YouTube to look the steps while you hear them.

What does rendering it in Blender do?

It gives a bit more quality on model textures, and 3D effect to the picture, also, you have to put some "lamps" manually to illuminate the stance by yourself,which let you make so much lightning effects. It's a good tool for make 3D pictures if you have patience ^^
