Description (2009) This is my alien creature that I call a Mantisant again. It's fully coloured in PhotoStudio 5.5 (which is an old and not very good program. I need to reinstall my PS CS2 again. But it's got some good things.

These aliens stand about 2.5-3 meters high and are quite intelligent. They live exclusively on a world that is not their native one. Their own planet is destroyed and they escaped to this new one in a stolen spaceship as they couldn't build one themselves.

I am quite happy with how the colouration came out. I'm not very good at computer art. It's made with a mouse and much cursing! The colour blobs in the top left is the colours I have used in this picture. It took me about 15 hours? 10 maybe. (over a span of 3 days) I didn't really check the time.Hope you like it. Comment please!

No, I made this one up myself. What is Secret of Mana? A PC-game or RPG or something?

I love that it gives a very ant-like and mantis-like expression but the exoskeleton looks more beetle-like, with those cool feathered antennae of many Coleoptera, and then there's the reptilian tail. It really seems like an alien species that just happened to evolve similar traits to our insects

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YikYik In reply to scythemantis [2010-03-10 08:44:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'm glad you like it! I made them with more ant like antennae at first, but decided it would look better with those. I have considered putting exoskeleton on the tail as well, like overlapping plates. Do you think I should? To make it look less "put-together-of-different-animals" like.

Glad you think so! That it seems alien I mean. I'm gonna use them in a sci-fi story I'm working on writing. They live in hives with a queen like bees, but are semi-intelligent individuals as well.

You really like insects btw, don't you? Me too! Fascinating little things.

I think it looks fine, a lot of insects have a softer, differently-colored abdomen anyway. If you wanted to change it though, maybe you could try a transition with a few black exoskeletal bits down the back or near the base of the tail?

I'm nature-obsessed with a preference for invertebrates, insects and mollusks probably being my favorites. I've written a lot of animal articles on my site! ( bogleech.com )

Ok, thanx! I'll try that out and see how it looks like!

*lol* I thought so. I love all kinds of animals and nature related things. When it comes to insects I prefer beetles I guess, but am in general fascinated by all kinds of insects. Not into mollusks that much though.
Cool! I'll check it out!

My favorite insects esthetically are some of the most hated. Houseflies, roaches, lice and fleas all look awesome to me and I love their adaptations. I keep a lot of non-pest roaches as pets

Cephalopods are probably the most exciting mollusks, but I also love nudibranchs, snails, slugs, and even the seemingly dull mussels. Some mussels have parasitic larvae, and the adult females use bizarre lures and traps to infest fish! One even has a toothed shell, bites down on passing fish and squirts the larvae all over them : o

YikYik In reply to scythemantis [2010-03-14 19:37:49 +0000 UTC]

Houseflies can be nice and roaches are awesome! They are even social a bit! I like them because they're very cool more then because they're very pretty, but they look ok to me. Lice and fleas... I haven't really thought of how they look.

Yeah, I agree, the Cephalopods are awesome! All kinds of octopus and squids! There's even a land living octopus somewhere (I forgot where), did you know that?

Nudibranchs... cool, I didn't know their name. But they are very colourful and pretty! Aren't several of those poisonous? Maybe that's all of them even?

Ewww... Awesome really. So many strange lifeforms! I kinda like several of those weird things in the deep sea too. Those that live by the hot springs down there and things you know? (I'm not good with names on things)

scythemantis In reply to YikYik [2010-03-14 22:16:14 +0000 UTC]

[link] fleas look really alien, I especially like their "mustache" of barbs for anchoring to skin

I think the land octopus was a popular little hoax, though there is an octopus that will climb several feet out of water to pursue amphibious prey or move from one tidepool to another.

Nudibranchs don't have their own venom, but many species prey on jellyfish, anemones or stinging corals and somehow (we really aren't sure how) use the stinging cells in their own body. They're one-use only, so they have to keep eating jellies to reload!

YikYik In reply to scythemantis [2010-03-15 10:04:18 +0000 UTC]

Ewww... haha! They really do look alien.

No, it's in some tropical land with high air moisture. A small one that's kinda like an amphibian. It climbs in trees and stuff. I saw it on Animal Planet once! I thought it was really cool, but now I have forgotten where it was.

Yeah, I know of that one too. It's the one with bright blue circles/dots on it, right? Quite small.

I see! That's pretty cool. Stealing poison from others.
Heh, I feel like drawing a dragon based on one now... with their bright colours.

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-08-16 12:51:31 +0000 UTC]

Haha! But I don't think I am!
Hehee, yes, definitely a lot of cursing because it's so hard to just draw a straight line. And to keep the colour inside the lines!

Thank you for the comment too!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-08-16 22:10:28 +0000 UTC]

I tell you you're good at it, now you have to live with that
Haha, my biggest problem with the mouse was always that it was hard not to draw straight lines Everything looked so edgy, I couldn't get anything curved right, so I dropped the mouse as a drawing medium a long time ago

To keep the color inside, you could place the lineart into a separate layer set to multiply mode and put the colors into a layer below. Locking transparent areas is also very helpful if you want to keep colors in a defined area. But you probably know all that already, suppose it was just due to that program I never heard of

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-08-17 10:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha! I think I can live with it, even if I don't agree with you! *lol*

Yeah, that too. When I wanna do curves (like the lines on the tail) it wanna go straight and when I wanna go straight it always flies away somewhere else!

Yeah... I'm also lazy with the layer thing. I know it's really a good "tool" but I don't often bother. Hahaa...
Locking transparent areas? Interesting. I can't do that in this program I think, but it sounds good. I'll have to remember that when I get my PS CS2 back!
Haha, the program is old and not very good. I mainly use it when I scan things and resize them because it's easy there.

What's your fav medium? The computer right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-08-22 15:41:17 +0000 UTC]

This question is not as easy to answer as it may seem
The thing is that I don't have that much experience with traditional art. But from that I can definitely say that I love drawing with Indian ink. I'm planning to start playing with this again, maybe combined with watercolours, a bit in the style of Bill Watterson's comics
On the digital side, I'm becoming a growing fan of vector art and I'd like to explore the animation part of it a bit more, as you may remember.
So I can't really pin it down to one fav medium, both are suitable and fun for doing what I like a lot: comic and cartoon stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-08-22 22:21:29 +0000 UTC]

It's true. It is a hard question! If I should answer it I guess I'll say anything that involves dragons, in whatever form! Seriously though, I think I like well, painting with acrylics and watercolour and sculpting. And in general I prefer to make art that I can touch. (Not computer with other words. Though I do enjoy other people's computer art).

Bill Watterson? Never heard of!
Yes, that I remember! Do some more animations pwease!

Fun and cartoon is good. And you're good at it!

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-08-23 15:49:38 +0000 UTC]

I like your preference and talent in sculpting, I have seen this too rarely as someone's hobby, so it's even more interesting to look at

Oooooh, never heard of good ol' Bill? Calvin and Hobbes? The precocious little boy and his tiger friend? If you haven't, I honestly recommend to take a look at it (every library must have some albums ), I think it's one of the funniest, best drawn and most intelligent comics in the world

Haha, thank you very much! The plans for more animations are already laid out, now I'll just have to wait for some free time and already started works to finish

They're really good sculpting artists.

Oh! Calvin and Hobbes! yes, then I know! I just didn't know his name! Haha! I've read it! Not my fav comic, but it's cool. I prefer Nemi, Elvis, Oots etc. But it's one of those that must have been read. And it is very funny! I agree.

Woot! Looking forward to see it! *summons some free time for you*

...wouldn't it be awesome if it was that easy?

Woooah, they're incredible! And they're making dinosaurs, I love dinosaurs I think I'll soon be going on a faving tour through their galleries

Haha, I took a look at the comics you named there, they seem to be cool, too I'm still fighting with the Elvis site, although Swedish is a bit similar to German, it's not the easiest thing to understand for me

Yeah that'd be really great and I thank you for the try Only a week left until your summoning will take effect!

Haha, I think they'll appreciate that!

Haha! I can understand that! I mean, I can read a little german, but it's not like I really understand things to any extent! Maybe it can be read in english somewhere?

*lol* You're welcome! If I could do that, I'd have soo much nice time for myself too! Wonderful idea!

Haha! It's the distance that does it!

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-08-30 20:03:21 +0000 UTC]

I tried searching for an English version on that site, but then again I had to decipher the text on the site.. a vicious circle But heck, what better occasion to learn a new language can one find? Starting with the similarities to German and a dictionary, it should work out somehow. I'll definitely try this when the exam's over

Haha, damn delay, you could expect the connection speed for summonings to be as fast as the internet these days! And humans call themselves technologically advanced, pah!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-08-31 08:54:42 +0000 UTC]

Haha, you crazy person! You will try and learn Swedish?
Well, if you do I can help!

*lol* Yes indeed! But apparently distance adds to the time of the summoning's execution! Yeah, the wonders of technology!

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-09-01 01:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I like languages, I'll just see how far I can get
Hej! Jag heter Filip. Jag kommer från Polen och jag bor i Tyskland. Hunden pruttar och det stinker, fy!
Now, after introducing myself with these basic sentences, I need to learn the basic words for a proper conversation, namely curses

Hehe, at least we know the exact arrival time of the summoning, that's not too bad compared to other technologies

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-09-01 12:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Hahahahaaaa!!! That was really funny!
Hehee, how come the first thing people always learn about other languages is curses? I know how to curse in both finland-ish(?) and japanese!

Hej, jag heter Marika och kommer från Sverige. Jag har två ormar som husdjur och de är väldigt söta!

That's true. You've got a point there!

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-09-02 00:00:48 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I'm glad you had a good laugh about it Well, curses are always inherently funny words and nothing conveys your feelings more clearly

Hehe, all my knowledge of Finnish is based on songs from bands like Finntroll or Korpiklaani That would also be a cool way to learn Swedish, but hell, all the Swedish bands I listen to have English lyrics

Ooh, ormar är verklig tuff! Jag har inga husdjur, men jag besöka katter och hundar i djurhemmet .
Damn, I wanted to say so much more and I'm not able to! thog must learn grammar

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-09-14 10:39:21 +0000 UTC]

*lol* I'm easily amused.
That is also true. At least when one is angry! But i suppose that screaming, frowning and waving your arms about is a quite universal way of making that point anyway, don't you think?

haha, I saw Korpiklaani liva two years ago now. That ws fun! I'm not that happy about Fintroll though.
Hmm... yeah, they do tend to sing in english, don't they! But my brother has some bads that sing in swedish... I think. Falconer does sing a little in swedish too! And I think Tyr did a norwegian song, but that's basically the same as swedish. (Almost).

Awww, har du inga egna djur. Vad tråkigt! Det är mysigt med djur. Jag ska skaffa hund senare också. Ska du skaffa nåt djur sen?

*lol* You can write it in english and I'll translate it for you if you want!

Aww... this is so cuute! --->

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-09-29 00:30:30 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, you're totally right, and I must know it since I'm learning sign language

Sadly, I have never seen any of them live.. the closest to a Swedish band which I've seen was Gothminister, but they're from Norway

Oh, then I'll have a closer look at Falconer, I haven't heard that much of them! Týr is such a great band! But it's difficult for me to tell which of the Scandinavian languages they're actually singing in, because they sound somehow similar if you don't know the differences I always thought their songs are in Danish, I probably couldn't tell which is the Norwegian one ^^

I have understood what you have written in Swedish, but it'll take some time to figure out the reply, so I'll do that tomorrow since it's a bit late now And then I'll have to ask you something about the grammar which I don't really understand

Haha yeah, that smiley expresses my feelings soooo well, I love it

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-09-29 15:00:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha! You do? Great! I've been thinking of learning that from time to time. But I always end up going: Why? I don't know anyone that speaks that way. *lol* But it would be cool.

Norway is pretty close. They speak basically the same language as us anyway.

Hammerfall are swedish. But don't sing in in swe.
Yeah, I love Tyr! Very nice! Even spoke to one of them two summers ago. Sadly he was going the other way then we were so... no fun. (He was entering the festival area and we were just leaving. Buuh) They sing in mostly faroese but some in swedish and norwegian too. I can understand the written texts sometimes, but mostly not. *lol* But the languages are closely related.

*lol* Ask away! I'm not guaranteeing that I know the answer, but I'll try and explain anyway.

Me too!

PsiMonkey In reply to YikYik [2009-09-30 23:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I started it just for fun and when I realized how much fun it really is, I decided to go on I don't know many persons to talk to in sign language either, but... when you learn it you get to know more people who speak it or are learning it, too. And you get to know deaf people which is very interesting, because they are mostly very nice and funny and they kinda have a different culture. And seriously, how cool is it to be able to talk to the guy at the other end of the lecture hall without shouting?

Oh right, Faroese would be my second thought, but that's really too hard to tell Good thing for you, that you get Norwegian somehow "for free" knowing Swedish

Jag vill skaffa djur senare, men jag vet inte antingen hund eller katt eller en annan djur. Men jag ska skaffa djur bara om jag har tillräckligt plats för de (mycket plats! ).

I'm feeling a bit stupid, it's probably full of mistakes It's hard to build sentences just with a dictionary... concerning grammar, there are tables with different forms which I don't really understand. What's the difference between "obestämd" and "bestämd"?
And I don't even know how to spell everything, there's so much to learn Anyway, thank you very much for your help so far

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YikYik In reply to PsiMonkey [2009-10-01 21:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Cool!
Yes, that's true.
Haha! Yes, it'd be awesome! But it also requires someone else to know the sign language, but it's be really fun! Well, I'm learning japanese anyway and that's fun too! Also, not that many that know it so I might be able to talk to my friend when in the city and noone will understand!

Hehe, yes we do. And Norwegians get swedish for free. We can understand danish too it is said. I never understand anything a dane says though. But I can read it with no trouble.

Haha, no, it's pretty good! Only small mistakes! You said "...en annan djur." It should have been "...ett annat djur." And the last sentence should end with either "det" or "dem" depends on what you meant. If you have space for "them" (dem) or space for it (det). They end with the same letter (them - dem, it - det) *lol*
Bestämd is to be firm, determined, resolute etc, whilst obestämd is unfirm, undetermined etc. When we put an "o" in front of a word it's usually the opposite of the same word without an "o". Just like the "un" in english. Some examples: Självisk - osjälvisk (selfish - unselfish), osams - sams (quarrel, be angry with someone - be friends, on good terms or agree with). You can say obra - bra too, but it's not really a correct word to say obra. But we do say so sometimes anyway. *lol* It means: not good and good. (However the correct word for "not good" is dåligt).

Haha, of course! But that's only natural when learning a new language right! I spell like crap at japanese!
No problem! It's really fun!
