September painting for a Czech dragon calendar 2020 . The theme was “Dragons in the History of Mankind” and I chose classical antiquity!

It takes place on a square dedicated to a dragon deity that protects this small antique city. No one knows for sure how it appeared there, or how long it's been, but their city has been prospering ever since so no one dares question it. Some people claim they've seen it move, others are convinced it's an unmoving statue with only a spirit of the deity. Animals are drawn to it, which makes guard dogs a common (living) offering and after the sun sets, they can be seen roaming the otherwise empty square.

Tools: Google SketchUp (perspective), Krita

The process is documented on my instagram . I started with rough sketches, a simple 3d model from basic shapes to get the perspective right and to settle on an angle, then a high-contrast greyscale sketch to place the shadows. (The link starts with that greyscale sketch.) From there, I added color and painted over it.
