This is an exercise in line-weighting, obviously the original lines are not my own. Also general pen-tool practice. Sources for comparison are here; i.imgur.com/LHhNScV.png Mudkips is the proper Sugimori stuff, I think Torchic is something official too? And Treecko was pulled from a composite image on Zerochan. Treecko needed a lot of work actually, to fix his gimpy hands and foot. (Cred: www.zerochan.net/1170558 ) They may even be more gimpy now than when I began

Since I started playing around with Illustrator my first instinct was to go with the kind of Total Drama style, where the inner lines are all one weight and the outer silhouette is the single line that is noticeably chunkier. But my drawings were all kinda wooden like that? So here I am trying to make sure the thicker lines are each heavier for a reason - whether it be the swoop of a curve, or to add some depth or just to be dynamic.

I will probably colour these up like Trapinch a little later. I have got a version with flats done, but to look at it, you get distracted from the lines which are the point of the thing.
