Description Again it is flowing... again every shape changes...

As always the sun burns down on something that yet could be a ruin of a house and just a wink later...

Well... let's say you can't define what you see. There is no orientation. Nothing you'll see as familiar. No person you can ask the way... not even a way. No north, south, west or east. The sun directly above you...

A restless place...

Yes, that's a city. A city without townsfolk... a dead city... my city.

Whoever came here lost sense of time and got lost in the endless space. The sun seems to never go down or at least I’ve never seen it. There are no sounds here except the light movement of the sand. No wind... no water...

I saw one stray, one right after another go insane... starve... or just die, because they were too weak. But still this city appears so virgin. The sand eats every hint of guilt, though I know better.

Don't ask how I can survive. I don't eat, drink or even feel the heat. Only a little bit of sleep here and there. And you're right thinking this place is some kind of hell... nevertheless it's mine and I love it...

If you just could find a way to survive in that place like me, you would have a chance to see its miracle. You'll understand why this place is so gorgeous.

I’d like to show you the eternal movement of sand, the never ending variety of shapes and everything in such a beautiful colour. No clean surface, everything looks rough but feels so velvety. You can fall down a six metre high house-like formation and still not get hurt.

You won't even recognize it were six metres, because the formation will break down before you hit the ground. Laying there you feel the sand running through your fingers and see it forming whirls and flowers. Watching all of it a bit longer, you'll see the sand forming almost every kind of being, landscape and townscape.

The sand builds ruins looking so ancient and unique, but just for a moment... then they'll grow high to skyscrapers and break down as fast as they build up. Sometimes too fast... then I listen to my heartbeat and slow it down near to deadlock. That's the time when you'll understand that it's not me surviving on a place like this... the city exists because of me. It slows down as well when I do... It rushes if I rush... and it dies when I die...

That's also the reason I can't get lost... It's the reason why this city changes unceasingly... because I do...

Right, I'm forsaken... All alone on a place only I can live in.

Whatever... there's no need for someone getting me out of here. All I have to do is fall asleep. Then people will see me... then people lend me their hand... people I know I saw before... people, who died in the sand... smiling people.

If I would take their hand I could leave. I could live in reality and I could eat, drink, feel wind and water... but I also would die and never wake up in the sand as I always did.

I will never see the miracle of the city of sand... never see a calm yet restless place like this again.

I don't want to leave...

I want to dream...

Just a little longer...

Such a good idea for a city. I love how it changes along with you, like a reflection of the moods and thoughts. I also enjoy the ending, about how the option to leave is left there, but is not chosen.

Yoshi86 In reply to drachenmagier [2007-09-09 11:02:48 +0000 UTC]

drachenmagier In reply to Yoshi86 [2007-09-09 11:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, well.

Du kannst gerne lesen und schreiben was immer du willst.^^

Got a Neil Gaiman feel to it which is definitely a compliment. As TFO said, there are few typos here and there but nothing major (you wrote beautyful rather than beautiful, that sort of thing).

I liked it. You have a good turn of phrase even in a foreign language.

lol^^
Lots of stupid mistakes here. Ah okay I'm talking about stuff like writing before without 'e'. My former teacher would kill me.
I wrote this late at night and was too lazy to correct it. I better do next time...

Got a question:
The word estray...
I was searching for a word which means a person, who lost orientation and is wandering aimless. 'Estray' was what I found. Does this word exist? And if so what's the reason not to use it?

Thank you so much.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheeForsakenOne In reply to Yoshi86 [2007-09-09 14:38:36 +0000 UTC]

Hmm yeah it's a word. It's just MS Word didn't recognise it as a word which does tend to happen. I guess it's because estray is so archaic that most spell checkers won't have it built in. You could leave it as estray but it looks a bit strange since the rest of your narrative isn't in the archaic style that estray was usually used in..

Hmm, this is weard. I suppose this is not "you" in this story, or am I wrong... though I think you have a natural gift for writting. I think I've said this before, just making sure I sress on it.

Yoshi86 In reply to Adolin-of-Light [2007-09-08 15:08:28 +0000 UTC]

There's always a bit of me in what I'm writing.
Maybe it's not the part of being alone though in some points that's also true.
But I'm changing all the time is fact. In the end we all do...
And that I love to avoid reality sometimes isn't lied.

Well... the "me" in that little story is part of me.

Thanks for the compliment.^^

I'm just wonderring if something specific inspired you to write it. It spookily reminds me of something I wrote few years ago when I was in a weard state of mind.

Yoshi86 In reply to Adolin-of-Light [2007-09-09 00:39:24 +0000 UTC]

Hm...
It's just a part of my mind, my way to see this world. Of course there's more than that, but after reading "City of Glass" (by I will link my deviation to hers) and talking to her, I felt I had to write down this part.^^
You could say, she's the trigger for this.

Adolin-of-Light In reply to Yoshi86 [2007-09-09 02:25:55 +0000 UTC]

! Ok, I am entering a highly philosophical zone here that can turn into a big discussion. I read your friend's City of Glass and I just can't help it but to ask the question WHY? Don't get me wrong, I love it...it is brilliantly written, but at the same time it gives me that feeling of despair and hopelessness. What could have happened in a person’s life to say these words...how old is she and many other questions just run in my head. The same applies to you... why is your inner world like that? I know that humans are very complicated creatures, and there are numerous emotions running trough their heads, but as a inner world that you both describe that seems very harsh and ..I don't know heartbroken? Apathyc? just can't find the word.
I like her idea to collect different "Inner Cities" That can turn out to be a very interesting collection if you ask me!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yoshi86 In reply to Adolin-of-Light [2007-09-09 09:53:31 +0000 UTC]

Hm...
As you said humans are complicated. In my case this city describted shows just a extremely small part of my inner world. Not everything is like that, though I would lie saying everything is okay.
It is experienced pain, yes. But it's not hurting me much anymore. The rest is imagination.

Well drachenmagier is older than me. Don't ask how old, I don't know and I won't ask. All I can tell you is she has very deep thoughts and she likes to make others think. Best would be you read more of her written deviations and older journals.^^
