Description Title: Silent Hill Movie Poster Entry
Date: 01/03/2006
Medium: Digital Art
Size: 481 x 715 pixels at 72dpi

This was my submission for the official Silent Hill poster competition held on the Sony Pictures film site from December 5th to January 3rd. I had made three different posters previous to this one that were also being considered for the contest(they will appear in the gallery soon), and about seven or eight variations of this final version, but this is the one I finally settled upon.

I adhered to the rules and guidelines of the contest to the best of my capabilities. They were fairly straightforward, the piece had to be exactly 481 x 715 pixels at 72dpi resolution in RGB mode and it was required to include the title logo(two to choose from) and the credit block provided by Sony. We had free reign to use the artwork and images, available for download on the official site, in any way we pleased prohibiting any content deemed too graphic or offensive as stated by the rules. Use of any artwork outside of the official movie images was allowed provided that it is not stolen or copyrighted material.

For this poster, I wanted to create a design that would stay true to the game while capturing the essence of the film adaptation at the same time. I believe this piece does it fairly well. There's the protagonist character running through a dark hallway with a flashlight(check!), a giant rusty fan(check!), creepy little girl(check!), static & graininess(check!), the word "Silent Hill"(check!). It all pretty much sums up what the game is all about.

I used only two images for the background artwork and applied various static and grain filter effects for a gritty, textured quality. A little of it was done to the title logo as well. For the font of the other text words I used the only unofficial "Silent Hill" font I could find on the net. The tagline is taken from the name of that catchy Depeche Mode song, but I felt it could work.

There were no guidelines whatsoever regarding the use of actor's names or the director's, but considering how none of them are "big-name" or A-list individuals in Hollywood I doubt very much the studio would want them on the poster. I included them anyway because I felt it would balance out well with the rest of the poster. I arranged all these elements into a composition I thought would be interesting and flow together in a consistent manner.

(Note: Use of official Silent Hill screenshots and film art is not copyright infringement. Sony Pictures has granted permission to use their official film artwork and images for the sole purpose of creating this poster image.)

hi guys,

I am beginning to design a huge poster using PHOTOSHOP. The real poster display size is 1735 x 821 mm. However, it is not possible to work with the original size. It is terribly slow to apply effects and work with various other PS tools.

So, i am reducing the actual size to much smaller size maintaining its proportion. I also decreased the resolution to 240.

What do you guys think of this issue? Do you guys think the strategy I follow is feasible enough to go ahead? Pls kindly suggest me your views and opinions over this issue. I extremely appreciate to hear from you all. (PREFERABLE from THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE)

Tks in adv,
damian
