Location: Torr head, Ballycastle, Antrim Coast, Northern Ireland

This is Torr Head; A headland that for me marks the end of the North Coast of Ireland and the start of the east coast.

I haven’t taken so many pictures around the coast before and we went on a Sunday evening drive through the Glens of Antrim and ended up here. The lighting was fantastic so I took the opportunity to try out some compositional techniques and just work with the surroundings as well as I could.

The building you see is an old coast guard station that has panoramic view over the North Channel to Scotland.

This part of the coast has different characteristics from most of the Irish coast as it is sheltered from the full force of the Atlantic. You still get the majestic basalt and limestone cliffs of the North Coast but the sheltered climate means that more wildflowers and trees grow around here. It is also backed by the high blanket bogs of the Antrim plateau and is a good distance from any towns which limits residential development. Too many houses can spoil a scenic area (think Donegal)
It’s a really peaceful place and because it is off the main tourist road, it isn’t overrun by coach loads of sightseers and the resulting erosion of the landscape.
