This is exquisite--I love the tiny spot of color, and I also like that this piece has images of ladybugs as they really are--insects who live in grass. There's a sense of appreciation and honor for them here, but it's for the reality of the insect and not for some romanticized metaphor (although there is an element of fantasy and symbolism here, particularly in the bottom image, but it's in the combination of the pictures and the presentation, not in any alteration of the subject's form). Most of this observation comes from the top image--the head and legs are definitely those of an insect. I like this because I think people tend to forget that ladybugs are insects, somehow... The same person who will shriek if a cricket jumps onto their foot will laugh and speak baby talk to a ladybug. But look! Ladybugs are, in fact, bugs--and they're still pretty and elegant! And this drawing is proof.
Something I really enjoy about your drawings (all of them, not just this one, although this one showcases what I'm talking about very well) is that you manage to get soft and subtle shading without blending away the strokes of the pencil. This kind of goes along with appreciating and displaying the ladybug for what it is--the pencil strokes are a part of the medium, and you use the effect of the pencil strokes to your advantage rather than trying to blur them out (after all, if you wanted a photo, then take a photo! If you want a drawing, then embrace the medium). It's a subtle but beautiful effect, and you manage to create so many different textures--even the smooth shine of the ladybug's wings!
Definitely a favorite. I could sit here and drink in all the detail and fascinating technique all day.
