Description Something from days of old...
I've made this one pretty long ago, but somehow ended up never posting it. Guess it kinda winded up amongst those other Korra parodies I never posted. But I've seen a lot of bad blood all around the net these days, so I thought it's just as timely now as it was when I made it.

So I'm sure all of you are familiar with... that type of person. You know, the one, who constantly complains about how today's cartoons are just all so lame and bad and all around dumbed down in general, and how everything was much better, darker and more mature in their day...
And while there's some truth to this line of thought in some cases - say, if we were to compare todays Marvel cartoons with say, the 90s Marvel cartoons - , but to be honest, there's also a lot of counter-examples as well - say, the new He-Man or the new Thundercats cartoons in comparrison with their 80s counterparts - ,so  I think that this kind of generalization is and always will be faulty by default. Simply because if you judge something on some pre-existing grudge, than in the end, you're not judging the art itself.
Yes, some things were better "back in the day", but not everything was, so putting everything into the "bad box" just because it's new is not something we should do. After all, there are a lot of examples, where the newer version is the one with the better story, better character development, the one with the more mature approach.

So I guess the moral of this little comic is to be a bit more open-minded. Let's judge things for what they are, people. Remember, nostalgia is like fine wine - it can be great in small portions, but in bigger doses, it just turns people into jackesses

...and yes. That creepy ass motherfucker IS actually in the current TMNT show. Have fun nightmares! ^_^

I notice this as well. While we might have nostalgia for older versions of shows, sometimes newer reboots do actually improve the nooks and crannies and elements that didn't work in the older version. And I think that's what the point of a reboot is and not many reboots actually get enough credit for that. Like Planet of the apes - the newer films are good movies for understanding the lore and mythos of the original movies but get how to write better characters, arcs, and an overall world that feels natural and less 1970s sci-fi.

I'd actually say shows these days are much darker than their 80's counterparts. Even something as colorful as Adventure Time can touch on some pretty heavy subject matter from time to time, even have outright character death. Honestly, I look back on a lot of shows from the 80's, and I can't even take them seriously. To me they're corny schlock with cookie-cutter writing and bland characters that were really only made to be over-glorified toy commercials and in many ways are much more "dumbed-down" and "overly PC." Their production quality was also incredibly low, you can find animation errors in almost every other shot. I get that they were "for kids," but that doesn't poor quality.

Much of this attitude also stems from the childish mindset that darker/mature=instantly better. More recent shows have shown that bright and upbeat can still be really badass. Many people still can't get out of the mentality that quality doesn't come from the tone itself but from how you handle said tone. Remember when they tried to make things like Bomberman and Sonic the Hedgehog "dark?" They were completely disasters! The being said, I'm glad more writers these days are less afraid to introduce more serious topics and situations into modern cartoons, but people still need to stop thinking it needs to be a requirement for a story to be considered good.

That's not to say this era hasn't had its fair share of garbage, but every era has garbage. Most of what people reflect on and remember fondly is a very small percentage of everything that was made in that era, and this goes for everything, from books to movies to cartoons to video games etc. (Sturgeon's Law. Look it up).

Overall media was better in the 90s 2005ish, because look how long the lifespan of the average show is now even if it is an action animated series (Dundercats, Transformers Prime, Legend of Korra, Wolverine and the Xmen, etc.) compared to yesteryear's versions....

That was pretty much my reaction as well, to be honest. I mean the guy was FREAKY!

Yeah, I mean he's not even "I'm pretty scary for a kid's show" scary, more like "I'll devour your soul and consume your flesh" scary...
So he's a pretty good posterboy for the point I was trying to make here.

*sighs* I miss the new Thundercats show. It wasn't perfect, but it was good IMO.

To be honest, I only checked it out originaly because I was bored. Wasn't a fan of the original, and I also thought "C'mon, they are cats, it's hard to take them seriously, being all badass and such... ", but then I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed it.
And yes, I think it was really good as well. Hard to explain, but it just had something about it, that made it really likeable. The plot, the characters, the blend of action, humor, darkness and the whimsical moments just worked really well. Or so I have found.
It also managed to do that whole "teach kids something, but not in a condescending way, so even adults can enjoy it" thing real well.
Oh and the voice cast was stellar.

I'll be totally honest: Original Thundercats, I FUCKING LOVE IT. It's pure nostalgia goggles, I won't deny it for a sec, but I can't help but love that show so much.

And yeah, the new one was excellent. I'd say it had a lot of points better than the original show without a doubt.

Nostalgia like that is okay. It's the one that people deny and seem to be oblivious too, that bothers me. So basically the kind I referenced in my latest journal entry.

Very true there. Being in outright denial like that is not a good thing at all.
