The giraffe is an African artiodactyl mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. It is traditionally considered to be one species, Giraffa camelopardalis, with nine subspecies. (Source:Β Wikipedia)
In Japanese, giraffe is pronounced as Kirin, same as theΒ mythical creature. Perhaps that was how ancient people from Asia knew about this African wildlife. ^_^
