Physical therapy and getting a little older. I've always seen Joey as fairly muscular compared to the other characters, but he was still a skinny teenager. XD Now he's not so much.

To his dad, who apparently takes little to no interest in his son's life, or who forgets about things five minutes after they're told (alcohol *ahem*), this ~may~ come as a surprise.
Not sure if he's ever even met Mai, took Katsuya's mom long enough to make her acquaintance.

Pretty much. Joey's mentioned Mai to him a few times, but he thinks of her as "that tall blonde my son talks about who I think might have been around during his graduation ceremony but I'm not sure."
The fact that he showed up at the graduation ceremony is actually mildly miraculous, but I like to think it's a sign of hope for his mental state.

The way Joey's hips are cocked as he's saying "not exactly..." seems odd, but I can't decide if that's just because hips don't tend to exist in the anime, or because I have a problem with it. Loved his stance in the last panel though. And Papa Wheeler's reaction.

The reason that pose looks odd is because Joey's hand was supposed to be on his hip through the entire scene, but I had a sudden moment of "aargh what am I doing here" and it kind of flubbed somewhere in the midst of the drawing process for that particular panel. It actually looked worse until I used some good old digital whiteout and fixed the weird way his hand looked.
Hips totally exist in the anime. There are people who've made a study of Yami's hips alone. XD
